Do you ever wish something more than a 4 hour blackout would hit so you could test how well prepared you are? I find myself doing that sometimes. Of course, I also sometimes wish that something would happen just to show the crickets that us ants aren't paranoid. Am I the only person like this?

I like a nice 3-5 day 'shutdown' to let me see where I'm lacking. When I lived in WI, I got those almost every winter due to blizzards and wind. I haven't had a 'shutdown' for a few years now and I really think I've gotten soft. I have all of my preps in order, but after moving to a new area and house; until I experience that 'shutdown', I won't be sure there's not other things I missed. Kitaye, after reading about the difficulties that many experienced during the ice storms, hurricanes and other natural calamities & knowing that these were comments by people who had taken steps to be prepared -I've come to the realization that there's some folks who just refuse to see that there's ever going to be a need for them to be prepared. 'It won't happen to me' seems to be their mindset, or is it just laziness? Some people just prefer to laugh at those of us who do prep but I bet they'd be at our door if they got cold, hungry or thirsty . I really don't know what the scoffers expect to do if the SHTF or even if they're involved in a major natural disaster such as an earthquake or ice storm. Ostriches, many many ostriches.

When I was on the farm... about 2-3 times a year we'd have a 3 day shut off. Hadda do everything (milking, watering etc) without electricity, phone, auto..... man, we sure had fun!

My family and friends tease me ALL of the time about being a squirrel when it comes to food and quilts etc......I have this absolute THING about winter boots, TONS of quilts, water in those nice neat jugs, and row upon row of home canning! I don't CARE if they tease me one little bit...cause like Kathy said...I KNOW where they would go if they needed help! We just discussed that today! Everyone gets in this tizzy every time the roads get the least bit bad! The ONLY thing I miss in this rent house is a nice fireplace! My friends that we rent it from, while we are building our own place(which BTW has a nice fireplace!) were allergic to wood smoke. At least that is what they said. I hadn't heard of that before! I really miss those nice warm fires in the winter time! Can't wait!

not wishing for blackouts. my driveway is 300 feet long through woods. nobody can see the house from the road. i love being snowed in. i know as long as i don't plow the driveway nobodies dropping in. it feels like a hug from mother nature.

dirty I'd love to see your place when it was being 'hugged'.
Sometimes I'd like to have a few hours without electric. Esp at night so the sky would be dark again.

My hubby says the same thing about the sky. He loves to look at the stars but the ambient lights from nearby cities and the street lights that line every road in this province make it impossible to see much. When we do lose power it is always during heavy cloud cover. I promised him we would build a proper observatory but only if we buy 200 acres in the middle of nowhere (Northern Ontario is looking better and better).
