What do,, about a shed

OK My shed for the miniature horses and chickens has been damaged because of all these wind storms and are leaking...mini's side is not in that good of shape. Will hold up as long as we do not have a snow storm.

These wee sheds are with in I would say 30 ft of the house. First he says we just replace the roof of the mini shed..but nothing about the leaking Hen house side.
Then Hubby wants a ugly pole barn. I don't really want a ugly metal slab right outside my bedroom window. But we have a rough idea on what it will cost.

So we will pricing out what a wood one will cost. Would prefer a wood one,, just because it would look a little more nice.

With all the price hikes,, I have no idea which will be less money??

Can't really afford to have someone come out and build something for us unless we take a small loan out.
Maybe we could just have someone pour a foundation on the slab we have now so it would be level?
Then if we do that,, who can we trust in this area?

Of course the concrete slab everything is on is ...ah... lopsided.

Part of the problem is hubby has to work off the farm. So he only has the weekends to do this.
Who knows what the weather is going to be on any given weekend.
While we work on that side we have to have Temp shelter for for the mini's, which is fairly easy to set something up right next to the house.
But when it comes time to build the hen house side... that should get interesting.

Something needs to be done soon. Just don't know what to do.

Should I just get a giant tarp and put it over both buildings for now?

The existing slab may be cap-able. Even if it lopsided. As for the roofs, I'd re-deck and go from there. Are the support posts gone or are they damaged? You can jack up the roof and re-set those.

I think I'm with you on the pole barn thing.

The supports are pretty much gone. Hubby has re patched them already they will hold up well enough for now. But I would not want to go another winter with them like they are.

This doesn't show the front of it. Its ugly to say the least. That silver tarp gave way and is no longer on there.

Well, if it were mine....I'd burn it and start over. Not because it's ugly (and I don't think it's ugly, persay...) but because the supports are gone. Also, I wouldn't want a flat roof. However, if the ceiling beams are still ok, you could still jack it up and replace supports then go from there. I think I would build a hen house by itself first if I were to demolish and start over. The minis would do ok with a lean to to get out the wind but the hens will need a little more protection. Hmmm... let me think a while on this one,.

Hubby is pricing out wood to see what it would cost in this area. From the looks of it so far will be cheaper than that pole barn.

We plan to make up a bid sheet to see what the cost would be at each of the lumber/home center places..then go from there I think.

Mini's have to be enclosed at night because of the Coyote problems. Dumb things are just about as tall as my two minis.

Just wish we could do this fast, but I know it isn't going to happen. Sigh ~

Ok, I'm going to try and make sense of this description....bear with me, and ask questions if it doesn't make sense!

I'd set some poles around the shed set in concrete in the ground and when those are set, Take 2x4's or 2x6's and frame the top so they are all connected. From there you could add a peaked roof. Metal would be easiest and last the longest.

That would hold you for a long time, because it would protect the flat roof from further damage, and you could still use the walls of your shed that you have now.

As money comes in, you could work on enclosing the new roofs sides....either in metal or wood. Then all you had to do when you are done is go inside and take down the old building.

It's kind of like when you see those flat roofed mobile homes, but someone has built a new roof over it that the mobile sits under. That would be what you are doing to the shed...with the option to add new sides later.

Once you get to summer time when things dry out you could pour concrete inside if you want that as a base. Wouldn't need it for foundation because your building would be supported by poles concreted in the ground.

That was a good idea Deb. So we went out and measured.

We plan only putting up 6' side walls to a 8' peak.
Parts of those two sheds are 14+' ft up.
Darn.. no way to just build a roof over that mess.

To keep costs down, you try to salvage from any construction i your area. If you ask the builder for permission, sometimes you can get really good stuff, especially if it's a commercial site.

We are way out in Farm Country. No one can afford to build.

Someone just told me about a discount/2nds building store over the bridge. Will go check out their prices. ;D

Ack, don't get your hopes up bergere. If that is the store between Chevron and Subway as soon as you turn right off the bridge. I went there because I heard it was cheap to get building material when we were remodeling the house....it wasn't cheap. Pretty much what home depot was charging, and I was really disappointed. Hopefully you are talking about a different place though.

There is a new Lowe's over in Longview (by Freddy's) I haven't checked it out though to compare it to home depot.

The prices of wood is so discouraging...

Tried to use Home Depot to Deliver stuff... what a night mare!
