i hope you all won't resent me, for what i'm about to do.
i had a local well driller out to my place to give me an estimate. looks like i will have a well drilled some time in the next 60 - 90 days.
i will keep my point well for back up.
i have given this a lot of thought. as much as i like this house, i feel as if i will be moving from this house in the next few years.
i had several plans to work around having a well drilled. however i think that all of them would be a detriment to my selling this place in the future. a majority of people just want the water to work when the tap is turned on. they don't want me to explain how to extract the water from the ground through my hobbled together system.

Dirty, I think that's a wise decision. I know how to get water out of the ground in a more labor intensive way but I don't want to HAVE to unless there's some major disruptions in the world. ;D I'm sure a buyer without the knowledge of a more 'primitive' way of doing things would just cross your place off the list without a nice well and running water. As long as you can afford it, heck you'll enjoy the luxury too plus know you've made a sound decision for the future. So if you leave the UP, where are you thinking about for your next relocation?

I think the UP is a really nice area too! How deep are the wells in your area? Do you have a lot of problems with sulphur water? I was raised in the lower peninsula and my father had a new well drilled, not because the old one was dry but he wanted one closer to the house. As it turned out, the one closer to the house was sulphur water and we continued to use the older well & my mother used the sulphury water for the animals and gardens.

the three closest wells are all within a couple feet of 100 foot deep. they are all about half a mile away in different directions. all drilled by the same guy who will be drilling mine. none of my neighbors have any water issues. although the driller did say occasionally he runs into, iron in the water. but he didn't think i'd have that problem here.
kind of looking forward to lots of water on demand.

You can't lose putting in a well, its amazing how many people who are looking at moving to the country have no idea how the water works. We got some pretty crazy questions asked when our house was for sale. It was very hard to keep a straight face while answering them.
You made a great decision, and I bet you will like all the water!

um how to put this. i went to get the permit. i asked a few questions. words where exchanged. at some point, in the heat of the moment, i believe i mentioned Thomas Jefferson, bureaucracy, waste of tax dollars, government control of people. oh yea and something along the lines of "then i'll get water without your permit". luckily i didn't give my name or address. So, on to the next idea.

I think those work best in areas without a lot of subsurface rocks but it's worth checking into. I have to say "You Rock" !! So many people would have been kissing the permit givers butt just to get the permit, you on the other hand stuck to your principles! Hang in there!

If it's not too personal, may I ask what reasons they gave not to give a permit that drew out an "argument"? I hate dealing with Gov't offices to, you're not the only one! Kaza

it's long and i don't want to try and write a story. i'll try the condensed version.
the inspector didn't want to answer my yes or no questions till after i gave him my 300 dollar check. then if i didn't like what they had to say i couldn't get my money back.
combined with their ability to fine you for having something that isn't up to code, once they see it on your property.
the inspector just came across as a snake. and i wasn't willing to go down a one way street without knowing what was at the other end. when it didn't need to be that way.
in the vernacular of our youth "whatever"
i've mentally moved on.

I have had that happen before. They seem to forget that they work FOR you. Don't blame you one bit for getting upset and walking out. Kaza
