will diesel work in a kerosene lantern?
what kind of experiences have you had with kerosene lanterns?
my mom tells me that back in her childhood that was all they had. they would have to wash the walls every spring. because the lanterns would darken the walls.

I remember my parents having kerosene lights(lanterns) around the farmhouse when I was a kid. They were smokey and smelled something fierce but they gave a nice light when we had power outtages due to major blizzards.
I've never used kerosene in my lanterns but I know it worked in the 50's & 60's so it should work now.
As far as diesel, hmm I have no idea. I'll ask on a couple of other farm boards and see if anyone has actually done it.

diesel? I would be to try it. Do some research on goggle about diesel and find out how flammable and dangerous it may or may not be.

not sure how it is where you are... but Kerosene here is up to like $7.00 a gallon!

Hi Dirty! Diesel 'will' burn in a lantern, but it will be very sooty and have a pretty strong smell. K-1 kerosene should be the ticket. It's expensive, but a gallon will last quite a while if it's not your primary light source. I'll have to look into the cost around these parts.
Added:
Aladdin makes oil lamps which I believe use mantles and produce light something on the order of a 60-watt bulb. But they are VERY pricey!

It will burn if you can handle the smell. I don't think I would advise it though.
I used to use kerosene but have switched to odorless lamp oil because I can't take anything with too much of an odor anymore. And nobody wants to know what that stuff costs lol.

i forgot about this thread. i originally was trying to settle on one type of lantern for all my uses. well that's not working out so well. you guys and gals where right this lantern will burn diesel. however i've decided to use it only out on the patio. it more than fulfills it's role out there. i also feel safer not using it inside. i think i will now turn my attention towards an electric lantern or two for inside. battery operated maybe rechargeable.

I would stick to kerosene or go battery operated. Cause I'm not sure about diesel and flames.

Diesel ought to work. It won't burn as cleanly as Kerosene.
I used to have one of those marvelous "Alladin Lamps" and they were extremely bright and HOT!
