I've been reading on other boards that folks are encountering shortages of staples such as flour, sugar, dry milk, etc. So far I haven't seen that situation here, thank goodness. Have you seen any shortages and if so do they seem widespread or happening more at just one store? Putting on your thinking caps; what items do you feel will be in short supply this year? I'm thinking flours and maybe cornmeal will be more expensive & there will be less available, due to a variety of circumstances some being financial, some weather related.

I haven't heard about this - is this over at HT or elsewhere that you have heard this? I'd be interested in reading more.
I wonder about cooking oils, competing with the fuel market.

There were some HT threads on the survival forum about it plus references in CF to posts on Barker Hill about shortages. The poster said she was seeing shortages of flour and sugar.

I haven't seen any shortages....at least with things I buy. I got topped off at the gas station a couple weeks ago and could only put $75 in the Suburban, but I have since put in more so I don't know what was up with that. Have a funny story though...when my mom was little she said there were shortages in sugar, coffee. I think this was back in the late 40's, early 50's. She lived way out in the country on a farm. She said everyone was struggling. The county road that went by her house was used by trucks hauling items to the store and during this shortage a truck delivering butter went off the road right by their house and crashed. The driver said "Take as much butter as you can because it can't be sold now." She said her family felt so rich eating all that butter. It gets funnier, because during that same time a pop truck crashed. And, the driver said take the bottles of pop. Now pop was something they never got to buy, or drink. Mom said they had cases on cases of bottles of pop stacked in their fruit pantry. All the neighbors found excuses to come and visit after that because they knew they would be offered a pop while they visited. Because of those two trucks crashing and them ending up getting the goods on them, she said her mom use to sit out in the yard and wave at the truckers to try and distract them as they navigated the tight steep corners in front of the house, so they could get more goodies.

Yep, over on HT there are threads about shortages, and prices increasing quite a bit.
Most of the people on the Survival board there don't bite, so you may want to visit from time to time. Hopefully, we're mostly nice and informative.

i think any shortages we see will be a result of hoarding. everyone, corporations included, trying to buy before the prices rise farther.
i think the problem will be one of cost, for the us.
i'm guessing that third world nations will have massive shortages. because the poorer nations just can't compete at a certain price point.

We've not had shortages of human staples but I'veheard rumours that animal feed is in short supply this year. THe prices on human staples have shot up considerably over the last few months and that usuallyhappens when shortages are on the way.
