I read alot on the forums where they get their BOB list from the LDS, or they get their prep food from the LDS, and the LDS require them to have a years worth of food and supplies stored in their homes.
I don't know anyone who is a LDS, and I am extremely curious to know why they require/or suggest prepping? Is it a religious belief or just a security for you?
I hope if anyone knows, that I am not questioning their beliefs...just curious if there is a reason behind it all.

I was LDS for about 10 yrs but it's been almost 20 yrs since I formally left the Church. I have to say, their beliefs on preparedness was one of the big draws fir me. I didn't remember if it was scriptural or just due to economic reasons so I checked for you. There's quite a few references listed in the link below, so for LDS, I'd say it's at least partly scriptural If you don't know it, besides the Bible & Book of Mormon, there's two other sacred texts- Doctrines & Covenants & Pearl of Great Price. You can probably find them online if you're interested in doing some further research. lds.about.com/library/weekly/aa112202a.htm

I'm such a google dork, or is that a dork who can't google? lol
Thanks Kathy, I didn't know they had so many books they went by. I'm actually clueless about that religion...that is why I was so curious to know why they prep. I have never heard of a religion that preps so much!

I am a member of the LDS. The church has a 'living prophet'....it used to be that they were to prepare and store foods for 'one year'....then the living prophet said that now we need to store foods for 'two years'.
It adds up to buy a little extra food staples each time you go the store, etc. That way it does not cost so much at one time. It is sort of like a savings account for food....where just a little bit is added to the store room and over time it makes a lot of food on the shelves.
The members can order food staples such a rice, whole wheat, etc. in bulk. They just sent in the order forms this past month for new supplies.
There are four books in the LDS scriptures. Each year, the members are asked to read and study one of the books, this year the book for study is the 'Book of Mormon'.
