Last few times I've been at Costco, I've pondered the Emergency Food Supply packages they have. Comes in five gallon buckets. (Tried to find the product on their website, but it's not there.) Anyway, I decided to buy one today--spendy at $107, but at 275 servings, it's way better than most prices I've seen for Mountain House or MREs. There are 9 different recipes, plus whey milk, all in five serving packages. (I figure two adults and a growing pre-teen would chow a package per meal). All vegetarian, but with a good balance of protein to carbs. Have any of you bought and tried this product or others offered by Food for Health, International out of Orem, Utah? I've already got MREs for various quick-grab emergency meals, plus I rotate canned and dried goods. I figured this stuff couldn't be too bad of an investment. Oh, yeah...here are the different meals: Whey Milk Ala King (which I suppose you could turn into "Neighbor's Yippy Dog Ala King") Cacciatore (see above) Barley Vegetable Country Noodle Corn Chowder Potato Ba-Con (this kind of scares me) Rice Lentil (which, actually, I had covered--in spades ) Western Stew Blueberry Pancakes Each packet requires a 5-7 cups of water and very basic cooking utensils (skillet, covered pot or for whey milk, a suitable container). Most require up to 20 minutes of simmering. All are vitamin fortified. 20-year shelf life; instructions and ingredients for each recipe are printed on the bucket.

I've never tried them but I think I might get one or two just to be safe. I have a lot of preps, but not a lot of 'instant' or quick items in my storage. I've never had whey milk so that would be an adjustment but otherwise it sounds like a good base to add other items(Fido or Fluffy not withstanding ). Now I just have to find a Costco!! If you try any of the items-please let us know how you liked them.

I'll be honest--I don't think I'll ever try them unless I have to, since I got them solely for backup supplies. If I get more of a windfall in the next few months, though (not likely, since I'm building this year), I'd like to buy another few buckets, and if so, I'll definitely crack into one or two differerent meals. They might be great for backpacking trips, after all, and they've GOT to be better than MREs!
