I bought 20 of them about a year before Y2K; I got mine from Sportsmans Guide in Minnesota. Gamma Lids I like them; they really seal nice and tight but they're so much easier to open than those kind you pound down with a hammer and then have use the special opener. Way back in the 90's I think I paid $4.95; but they're still not too expensive. If you plan on buying much from Sportsmans Guide; I'd recommend joining the Club. I saved a lot over the years even with the cost of the Club membership.

What's special about gamma? I went to the site but they didn't seem to have much in the way of explanation. I guess this is another one of those things that everyone already knows about but me... Is gamma the sealing material? Or the technique used for sealing? For those prices, I'd have to say they're resealable (?) but what makes them different from other resealables, like those giant, reinforced Zip-Loc bags? Inquiring minds want to know! /Via

Gamma lids replace the snap-on lids on round 5-gallon buckets. It's a brand-name. The lid has a big, handy thing you put your paw on to turn, (can't better describe the shape of the top surface) and there's a gasket in the rim to seal out water/air. Yes, they are resealable.
They're used regularly by rafting companies, boaters, food storage fans, geocachers, etc. Some of those square stackable commercial dog food bins use a gamma-like lid closure. You can get different colors, which is handy if you do a lot of categorized storage. They're food-grade, so I plan to use them for honey surplus as well as all of the above.

i was wrong in my first post the total for four of these came to 26 dollars and some change. anyway here is a closer look at the lids. 1.lid after it has been unboxed. 2. lid after separation. 3. instructions said to use a mallet. all i had was a bfh and a 2x4. 4. here is a closer look at the lid. there is a rubber seal on both the part you can see in this picture and around the underside of the piece that is permanently attached to the bucket. the manufacturer claims it is waterproof and airtight. 5. insert valuable post apocalyptic supplies. 6. seal lid and bury.

Great pictures, dirty! You should have done the ones on that website. And now I know whose yard I should dig in if I get thirsty after the apocalypse. /Via

I have them on 4 of my buckets in the house. Much easier for me to use than the original snap on ones. Need to get more of them. Though I get them through Azure Standard here in OR. They are a bulk Organic food store,,who home delivers.
Great how to pictures Dirty. <VBG>

Dirty, great pics but I'm telling you-if the SHTF and you have to go digging; you're gonna want more than one beverage in that bucket!

Whoa...that is way cool, and now that I see your pictures, I understand what they are! lol
We bought some containers that were 1/2 gallon, and 1 gallon that have that exact same lid but we bought the containers/lids as a package that was already assembled. We use them when we kayak.
I'll have to ask dh where we got them, its been a long time but would give you more options on container sizes.
