does anybody here have an l.e.d. lantern? how do you like it? is it bright enough to read by?
i was thinking of getting a traditional lantern. but after seeing the l.e.d. ones, i think I'd rather have one of those if the work good. they just seem safer. also I've seen the l.e.d. lanterns that can be cranked to supply power. that would probably be my first choice.

I bought one of those small wind up LED flashlights, but to be honest, I've not used it enough to know if will hold up or not. It doesn't weigh a lot or seem very substantial, but it was on sale. I thought it would be good to give it a try.

I don't have a lantern, but have the flashlights that you crank that are LED. Put them in all our bob bags. I like that they don't take batteries, and so far they seem to keep working. They feel real light and cheap though...like you wouldn't want to drop them on concrete. I don't think they are as bright as regular flashlights, but will do the job when you need them.
We have kerosine (hmm, I don't think that is the right spelling) lanterns and they are really bright! We hang them in the house when the power goes out.

i thought about getting a kerosene lantern Bbird. i just don't want to have another fuel to keep around. that and i just think it would be worse to drop a kerosene lantern than the l.e.d. one. that might just be the trade off to have a light that is bright enough.

That's a good reason Dirty. I cuss at our use of kerosene...for one, it is hard to find here. I have to travel to a big company that sells it by the delivered tankful to get it and when I walk in with my 2 five gallon buckets they act like I am taking up their time.
I'm not real thrilled with the smell from the lanterns either. Its really the brightness of them though that keeps us using them. Our house is really dark. Even in the summer with the sun bright if we have to read we have to turn on a light.

We have and use the LED wind-up flashlights. DH cleans the bank at night and it is dark when he is done so he has to use the flashlight to see where to turn the key on to the Trail Hog to come home. Works great. I use them at times to run outside to check on the barnyard at night when there are strange noises that I wonder about. I like the fact that they require no batteries, just wind them up and glow.
