I noticed that sugar is now added to some canned tomatoes and peas. Who expects sugar in canned tomatoes?
Also the size of tuna cans continues to shrink. They are now 6 ounces. Most veggies are no longer a full 16 ounces anymore either.

I like the helpful notes they add to the label such as the "50% more than 2 liter size!" on a 3 liter bottle. Duh. No mention of price. I subscribe to Consumer Reports and they have had several articles about tissues, etc. shrinking in count per box, yet the size of the box and the price remain the same. /VM

This good to know for people that have diabetics in the family.

So many products you don't think about have added sugars(double check any ingredients ending in ose), starches or msg which is listed in so many different versions it's hard to keep them staight. Then the FDA says we're getting fatter-well gee I wonder why?? Yes, overeating is one part of the puzzle but hidden sugars and starches aren't helping either.

Reading the ingredient label on processed foods can help to identify added sugars. Names for added sugars on food labels include:
brown sugar corn sweetener corn syrup dextrose fructose fruit juice concentrates glucose high-fructose corn syrup honey invert sugar lactose maltose malt syrup molasses raw sugar sucrose sugar syrup

I know. It's plain scary to me when I can't even pronounce half of the ingredients. I just don't buy it anymore. Over the years, my main thing was training my girls to read the tiny print of ingredients to scan for hidden meat/chicken fats and broths. Amazing how that varies from brand to brand. Deb

Deb, I bought some 'vegetarian' vegetable broth concentrate. At the time I was following my doctors recommendation to eliminate all meats & meat fats from my diet to see if part of my intestinal problems were allergies to meats. I 'assumed' if it said vegetarian that's what I was getting. Nope-about 5 down on the ingredients list was less than 2% added chicken fat!! So I'm a list reader too!

I am still amazed how many processed potato products, like tater-tots, depending on brand still use lard, or beef tallow. I don't buy them for myself, but when my college daughter comes home to visit, that is one of her favorites. When we make Mexican...Canned refried beans...the regular uses lard, the vegetarian uses vegetable shortening and is still high-fat, so we have trained ourselves to only buy the no-fat type which is just beans, water, and seasoning.
