My dad used to make these two when we were growing up. I have heard these were southern gravys. They are so good on hot buttered bread.
CHOCOLATE GRAVY
3 cups milk 1 cup sugar 3 tablespoons cocoa powder--almost heaping 3 tablespoons flour--almost heaping Dash of salt Splash of vanilla
Blend dry ingredients together and add to warm milk bring to a boil. Remove from heat add splash of vanilla and butter to taste. Serve over biscuit's or buttered toast
TOMATO GRAVY 2 tablespoon bacon drippings 1 small onion diced 1 medium can peeled tomatoes or ketchup 1 tablespoon flour 1/2 cup water or milk
After frying bacon, (or sausage) remove from pan; pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the drippings. Leave any "crust" left in skillet. Sauté onions until translucent. Chop tomatoes and add to pan with thickening (1 tablespoon flour mixed with a half cup or so of water). Serve on hot biscuits.

I've not had tomato gravy, but chocolate gravy is some gooooood stuff! One of the local restaurants has it on their breakfast menu and they do a decent job. *drool* /VM
