I was watching Rachel Ray on the Food Network the other day. I noticed she was using a bowl for a garbage bowl (peels, cans, and other junk). I have always used the kitchen sink then throw away in the garbage from there or I take stuff to the garbage. But since then I use a big bowl like Rachel Ray does it is so much better to me. I don’t have to bring the garbage to the sink I can take the garbage bowl to the garbage. It saves steps. Do you use a garbage bowl, sink, or the garbage?

I've always had a trash/garbage bin in my kitchen but I saw her garbage bowl and thought I'd try it too! It really does save steps and mess! ;D I don't use a bowl but a 5qt ice cream bucket. That way, if I'm doing multiple types of prep, I can pop the lid on between peeling and chopping so I don't get fruit flies-where those little buggers come from so fast I'll never understand.

Where does those fruit flies come from anyway? My fruit is in the fridge.

We have a stainless steel pail on the counter for compostable scraps. The kitchen garbage can sits next to the prep station so everything is within easy reach.

Kitaye, you're just too well organized. ;D I used to have a 5 gal pail to hold all of the peels & such when I was canning-then I'd take it out to the compost pile. Now, I can't have a compost pile and that bothers me-all of those goodies just going into the dumpster.

Also we have a long narrow kitchen with little counter space so we spent alot of time arranging and rearranging - much to hubby's disgust

I've always used a plastic bucket like the big icecream buckets. Keep the lid on it so I don't have to look at it, lol. Throw it out after dinner every day.
I love clean sinks, so never liked to peel fruit and veggies in the sinks, so I use a colander to catch the scraps and then dump them in the bucket.
We don't have garbage service here, so all garbage stuff gets seperated. I use small bags to put the cans, paper, plastic in. When they are full they go out in seperate garbage cans outside...when they are full, off to the dump they go to the recycle center. I rarely have anything that I have to pay to get rid of.

I don't watch the show, but I do keep a quart-size plastic yogurt tub on the counter near the sink; as I do not have a compost bin, any meat scraps go to the trash and all other fruits, veggies and coffee and tea end up in the tub; that goes to the worms. The fruit flies lay their eggs in the fruit peels; thus the name fruit fly. I have always used a large bowl.

TB, I have an idea if Rachael asked you to take the garbage out-you'd be right on top of the task!

Not to rain on your parade, TB, but Rachel Ray works my every last nerve. Now, Alton Brown...well, that's a different story. He's so clever and funny and he has the best recipes and his shows are SO interesting and and and... I'm sweating now so I'd better stop. ;D Anyway, I think the bowl idea is great! I usually use plastic grocery sacks and then con DH into carrying it out to the compost pile when I'm finished but I bet the bowl would be a lot easier to empty. I'll give it a try! /VM

Alot of people need the garbage bowl for their cooking. Most folks I know can only cook about 2-3 things well.

Yes, Via Media... Alton. He is so quick-witted, and a bit more on the brainy side. Never boring. Love those glasses of his, and that voice... I know, I know. Have you ever noticed all those women chefs never wear loose shirts? There is always a body-hugging/cleavage shirt thing going on. I wonder if you put a big baggy shirt of them instead of those tight t-shirts men would still watch? That Paula Dean, the one from the south who does more of that down-home cooking, is the only female I have seen who wears loose clothing on that channel. That gal is certainly not afraid of calories or fat in her recipes. What amazes me is just when I think she is done, she pours something else loaded with more calories on top of what it is. About the bowl, yes, I have always just used a random bowl for peels, coffee grounds, whatever that meal brings, but I use a new clean bowl for each meal. I don't know why. Then I take it out and spot compost it in one of my raised bed wood boxes. Yes, I wash more bowls, but hey, it benefits the soil, so it's for a good cause. Years past, though, now that I think about it, I would just put the peels on an old newspaper. Deb

I have always used a bucket. My kids and I have nick-named it the yucky bucket. When we are done with it we either take it to the garden and into the compost...or to the chickens...depending on what it contains. If we are having lots of eggshells and potato peelings....stuff my chickens don't eat....then we use two buckets. Then to confuse matters more....we sometimes have THREE buckets because we have a small one for the rabbit! If we give stuff to the dogs or cats we just put it directly into their bowls or we would have FIVE buckets! I just hose my buckets out...I must have 20 galvanized little buckets around here! I use them for everything!

The garbage can gets put in the middle of the kitchen when I'm cooking (sounds odd, but the set up makes it work) and I can toss from the fridge, stove or sink. I'm an 'all over the place' kind of cook so it's fitting.
Rachel is okay, I don't have the money to cook like that! 30 minutes or not. Hubby has the FHM, was so proud when he brought it home 'sweetie, we have something in common ..ha ha
We have an agreement that I would dump him for Alton Brown, he's okay with this- as long as he gets to come to our house to eat!
