What is your favorite kitchen or cooking tip?
I heard one on a cooking show so I tried it and it works.
Chew gum while peeling or cutting up an onion and you won't cry.
Does anyone else have one?

Keep hubby out while I'm working! It's safer and easier.

Take off your glasses when opening the oven, otherwise they fog up.

My DS thinks that is just funny when I do it....fogging up my glasses when opening the oven. ;D When mixing things in a bowl, I put a kitchen towel down under the bowl to catch anything I miss. That way it is easier clean up. Because some days,, I am just messy. ;D

I'm sure I have a ton!
Spray pam on your spoon before you measure honey or corn syrup or PB (anything sticky)
To core a head of iceburg lettuce, firmly 'bang' the stem/core part on the counter. A couple of thwacks and it comes out clean and you don't waste your lettuce! (I can't make it work with cabbage, boy did hubby have a laugh at me trying!)
When you put meat up in ziplocs, lay them flat and 'smush' the meat down until it's as flat as it can go. They stack in the freezer nice and neat and thaw faster this way.
If you're always losing your hand-towel, instead of flipping it over your shoulder you can bang a gromet into the corner and hang it neatly on a cup hook
Microwave your damp sponge until it steams good. Disinfect the sponge and you can wipe out the micro real quick - spills will be steamed loose.
If you have a mug w/stains OR a pot with stuck-on food; use denture tablets. They will get the stains off, stuck food off, disinfect and smell like mint. They will make your crock-pot look like new. {I'm such a cheater, I cook chili in the crock-pot, dish out the leftovers to freeze them pop in the water and a couple of these tablets! Cheaper than the liners!}
I also line the veggie bins in my fridge with thin dish towels. Then if it needs a cleaning I just toss in the washer (my kitchen in the old house was built by a man, it was nearly impossible to get the veggie bins out of the darn fridge)
I love the tip about the towel under the bowl, that could save a ton of heartache around here! I did break down and buy a 'batter bowl' by pyrex (not sure if that's a tip) because I can hold the handle... not as prone to flipping onto the floor!

manicmommy, I REALLY like the idea of putting towels in the veggie drawers. My fridge is in a corner so I can't open the door wide enough to get the bins out. I had a cucumber meltdown last summer and had to move the fridge in order to get the bin out. I also really like the grommet idea. We hang our kitchen towel on a hook near the garbage can. It's one of those round metal cans with the lid, so every time the towel falls off the hook, it falls down behind the can. Thank you!! /VM
