Ever wonder what side to cook aluminum foil on? Why does aluminum foil have one dull side and one shiny side? So that, the shiny side can reflect the heat on to the item to becooked, using a long established scientific principle that shinysurfaces reflect heat and light. I will confess, for years I cooked with aluminum foil on the wrong side, until my mother seen me one day. I didn't know that the shiny side upwas reflecting heat away from my cooking. Most times the food would stick to the foil. Well, then I knew why. What is your experience with aluminum foil?

I must do it wrong then. When I bake potato's I wrap them in foil, shiny side out, and when I cover dishes while cooking I have shiny side up. Hmm, maybe I'm doing it right though because I am doing it so it doesn't overbake or get the outside crispy while the inside isn't cooked.
I'm so confused, lol. What should I do when I am keeping something warm out of the oven? Shouldn't I have the shiny out to seal in the warmness? I just might have to experiment, never gave it much though just have always done it that way cause that is how my mom does it, I guess.

Well, you're BOTH wrong. Foil is for hats, not for cooking or baking. Where do you people get these strange ideas?? /Via

Good one V/M I just happened to talk to a bbq pro over the weekend. He said the shiny side actually has an agent that makes food less likely to stick. He said to always put the shiny side against the food. I didn't know why he told me this. Then I read this query and decided he must have known I would need this info soon.

Has anyone else noticed that sometimes the food that comes in contact with the foil during cooking will have little bits of what looks like aluminum on it? I'm not talking acidic foods but even things like summer squash casserole-there were those slightly shiny remnants on my squash.

You all are going to jinx me, because I've never had trouble with foil sticking, now watch me start getting sparklies on my food!! Oh man, wouldn't that send my dh over the edge, he already sniffs every glass before filling it for signs of soap smell. In my defense, I handwash everything and he is just weird!!
Via- Dontcha know that I only use "heavy duty" foil for my tin foil hats, and its always shiny side out. Besides being prettier, I can't have my thoughts intercepted by the mother ship! lol

Besides being prettier, I can't have my thoughts intercepted by the mother ship! lol I found some beautiful Reynolds snowflake embossed foil that I use for making special occasion hats. I wanted to be the first on my block who's not only protected from unwanted mind probes but was able to make a fashion statement while doing it.

So, this could be like the toliet paper debate, over or under. I heard Paula Deen say the other day on TV about the shiny foil on the outside. That made me think about what my mother said. Seems like you people don't know anymore then I do I say let's just use it for hats and forget cooking with it.
