Has anybody ever had these together before? Maybe I've led a sheltered life, but I tried this the other night and it was like the BEST thing I'd eaten in a long time! LOL!
My train of thinking on this was that I've had Colcannon before, which is boiled potato and cabbage, mashed together, and since sauerkraut is cabbage, but with more zing, maybe it would be good, too, and boy was it good!
I just boiled some red potatoes with the skins still on, and when they were done smashed them a bit with a masher, just to break them up a bit, then I forked some kraut out of a jar and mixed it in with the potatoes. Oh, I added some salt to the potatoes, too. Then I put butter on it when it was on the plate and let it melt in, and it was delicious!
I don't think I'll ever eat plain mashed potatoes again!
This is probably a really common thing, huh? And I just never heard of it?

I am not allowed to serve sauerkraut without mashed potatoes. I jokingly call this an Ohio food law because DH is from Ohio. He says you MUST put the kraut and juice in the little well you make in your spuds for gravy. This is one of his favorites. I usually make it with a pork roast or baked pork ribs.

Hmmm... I've never been to Ohio and don't know anyone from there, so maybe I was an Ohioan in a previous life. Yeah, that's it! Well, whoever thought of it, it's a good idea, and I LOVE IT! ~Lannie

I'll have to try this, we love sauerkraut but that is one way we haven't ate it. We put it on meat, and in sandwiches, and eat it plain usually. Oh and I made a hot dip with it a few weeks ago that was really good.
Hmm, now you have me wanting to experiment. I think using the next days mashed potato's and mixing with sauerkraut and making fried potato patties sounds good. We are having mashed potato's tonight, so I'll try this tomorrow.

Well, now I'm going to have to make some more tonight. Better stock up on sauerkraut when we go shopping! Can we stop talking about this now because I'M HUNGRY and I'm going to start chewing on the table leg soon. Maybe I'd better go do my afternoon chores to take my mind off of it! LOL! ~Lannie

I put mashed potatoes mixed with chopped up, drained sauerkraut in Pierogies. I've never had them together any other way than in Pierogies.

I've never heard of such a mixture. Now you've got me curious. Tomorrow may be an experimental day.

I am from Ohio and I have eaten my kraut with mashed all my life. We also use mashed spuds under our chicken or beef and noodles.
