I have some slightly old sr flour. I made biscuits the other day and they didn't rise. I think it's cause the rising stuff in the flour is too old. Do you think it would be ok to add baking powder or soda to it, or would it taste yucky?

I had some SR Flour that went dead and when I added baking powder, the bisquits were quite bitter.

I used some SR flour the other day because I was out of the other kind...I thought ...I found some AFTERWARDS of course ...but anyway...I used it to make bread and the bread was a little odd..but fine...just more dense than normal....it was yeast bread so didn't require the baking powder. I'm with Kathy...if you have to add the baking powder...go easy on it...because the taste of the dead stuff will still be in there so you are adding more bitter baking powder to it....so it may taste off....unless it is something with a strong taste that will cover it up! Kaza...it must be a Southern thang...I grew up with the stuff...you take a couple of cups of it...add a stick of butter or so(not quite a whole stick)...and stir in some buttermilk till it sticks together enough to roll out...and it makes some gooooood biscuits...oh...you also need a dash or so of salt.
