Organic Seed Suppliers Searchattra.ncat.org/attra-pub/altseed_search.phpThis database provides sources for organic seed of both agronomic and horticultural crops. Some national, mail-order suppliers of untreated seed are included, with the emphasis on small alternative seed companies offering open-pollinated vegetable, flower, and herb seed. Farmers should contact their certifying agency or state department of agriculture to find out whether these agencies can supply lists of seed sources for organic production of their region's leading crops. In states that do not operate their own organic certification program, contact a private certifier operating in that state. The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) lists some sources of organic seed. For grain growers interested in using local, bin-run organic seed, see the ATTRA publication Marketing Organic Grains for a regionally balanced list of organic grain buyers. An organic seed search service is now provided by Carolina Farm Stewardship Association's Save Our Seed Project for certified organic growers needing seeds, tubers, or rootstocks. (Seed mixtures like mesclun, trees, and seedlings are not included.) Submit a list of the cultivars/varieties sought, along with the quantities needed, by FAX (709-788-0071), e-mail , or mail (Carolina Farm Stewardship horse rearend'n, 49 Circle D Drive, Colbert, GA 30628). If no certified organic sources exist, the project will send the grower full documentation for the grower's certification agent.
