Last year I had three 60ft sycamores taken out from around my house because the roots were invading the house foundation and the septic tank. I had the stumps ground and also had any above ground roots ground into sawdust. So now I have 3 huge bare spots covered with sawdust and about 6 inches below that, the remains of the trees' root systems.
I'd like to replace those trees with shorter trees, just to get some shade back into the yard and to provide habitat for the birds, but am wondering (1) are there any short--about 20' tall--trees and (2) would they grow where the other trees were (I'm worried about those tree remains under the 6" of sawdust)?
Any suggestions?

Most Japanese trees stay small and grow slow.
Japanese maples Honki pines
etc...etc...
Depending on your clime,, there are some slower growing sub alpine trees.
