Please let me know how it goes.
Most of my plants are in containers but they are just flowers and herbs. I want to plant my Tomato plants but I have such a gopher/mole/vole problem I can't put them directly into the ground. Wonder if I put them in a plastic pot first and then set them in the ground part way. Would that work to keep the pests off the roots?

I've seen pictures of tomatoes grown in hanging baskets, and more recently hanging upside down in plastic bags. Might be an option for ground burrowing pests.

Lettuce in the continers are moldling and rotting from allllllllll of the rain. looks like a bust so far. tnborn Maybe it's too late, but, when that happens to me, I move what I can under the overhang of the roof so the rain doesn't hit the plants...and then I can control the water the plant gets. Unfortunately, I did raised beds this year and couldn't move my potatoes, corn, etc. under the roof. But yesterday it warmed back up after a very cold and rainy week so I think my plants will make it... For Bergere: tomatoes grow well (usually) in 5 or 6 gallon buckets, with drain holes on the bottom of course (and maybe just an inch of gravel on the bottom under the dirt to keep the holes open).

tnborn, Can you start over again? Try used Chamomile tea,, cool, then poured over the seedings to keep them from damping off.
Am giving that a try with the Basil,,which has the same problem. So far so good.
I did the container planting of tomatoes last year. This year I just stuck them in the ground,, gophers and all. Though the weather hasn't been good for growing tomatoes. Sigh ~ ~

I replanted in a real garden. I had holes drilled in my containers, but the stuff was rotting. :'(However, my tomatoes are doing well in the containers. tnborn
