OK... I know Black Walnuts are poisonous to horses.
But I want to get a Butternut and a Heartnut tree. They are walnuts but what is called white walnuts. Does anyone know if they are poisonous to horses?

Bergere, I have never had a horse; just a donkey so I'm not sure if this list is complete or not as to what's toxic to horses. I found this for you: Poisonous Plants for Equine

Drat, can't find anything about white walnuts.
Guess what I will have to do to be on the safe side, is wait until I can fence off an area so the horses can't get to the nut trees I would like to plant.

Have you tried calling or visiting the County Extension offices or the nearest Ag college; I'm sure one or the other could give you a more definitive answer. The things I remember having to watch for was wild cherry and loco weed-both very toxic to goats. Oh and yews, too much and the goats would abort. Good Luck, since these are common nuts the answer should be out there but it seems to be missing from every site I've checked.

If I knew where mine was I would look...but have you tried an online Merck Manual? There are Merck Vet Manuals and it has all kinds of info in it! I betcha that it would have a toxicology section! or whatever you call that....??... Our Merck Manual has come in handy on many occasions!
