I planted tomato seeds today! I'm about 2 weeks early from when I had scheduled to do that, but it's such a nice day today... And when we went shopping on Thursday, I noticed that the yuccas are greening up, and THE GEESE ARE COMING BACK! Woohooooo! We saw several large groups, all heading north. This morning the sun came up at 6:25 am here, and I just totally got Spring Fever! OK, we still have glacial ice all over the yard and driveway, but who cares? It'll melt eventually. Along with the foot and a half of snow that's covering my garden. So now I feel like there's hope for summer. I had already started some lavender seeds that I collected off my plants last fall, and they're sprouted and doing nicely. This is the first time I've tried growing lavender from seed because I always thought it was too difficult, but other than the fact that not all the seeds sprouted, there was nothing to it! Soon my south window shelf will be full of little green children. This makes me smile. I know a lot of you guys already have flowers blooming (all y'all Southerners!), but up here in the Frozen North, Spring is still a couple months away. ~Lannie

Spring fever is a wonderful thing Nothing tastes better than a home grown mater. Now I'm drooling thinking about one.

Very lucky you are Lannie! Don't think I will be able to get a wee Veggie garden in the ground this year sadly. Will expect pictures later of course!

Bergere, maybe your hubby or DS could fill some cheap pots from the Dollar store with potting soil and you could do some container gardening. It may not be a lot but just digging in the warm dirt might give your spirit a boost. Herbs seem to love containers and I found some varieties of peppers, bush beans, bush zucchini and bush tomato plants worked well too.

I would need to get some bigger pots. Did and still doing that a bit. Need to repot the Rosemary and two lavander plants. Even have my two grape plants in pots.
Raised beds with even the fake stone would be so much better. High enough I could sit on the edge. Herbs have been in pots since I moved here and they are not doing as well as they should. Sadly... Ah..well...most likely will be pots again this year.
Will need a soft cushined super light weight chair so I can weed my pots.

I'm drooling over a homegrown tomato! Stuck buying them from the stores and they are so sad looking and sad tasting right now.
I'm switching to pots and containers this year. I'm tired of fighting the garden every year! I skipped gardening last year, and missed it so much. My big problem is sunlight. I don't have any place here that gets sun all day long. My one spot I used for the garden only got afternoon sun and it just wasn't enough. With containers I can move things around and follow the sun, lol.
Wildlife plays wicked games with my garden so I should be able to move the containers up to the house at night....ok, I'm dreaming and this probably won't work but it will keep me busy all summer, lol.
I at least need tomatos, cucumbers! Everything else would be a blessing.

Well..Deb.... I have plenty areas where you could have a garden with lots of sun.. here if you wanted. You are more than welcome. Could come any time...with no worries.
Anyway.. I was hoping to get my raised bed going well enough I could do a small Victory Garden. Where the produce is set aside for the local food shelter. Hate seeing the Elders and small children go without food..when it should not be the case.

I'm not sure how far apart you guys are but this could work to both families advantage. ;D One provides the ground, plants & seeds, the other the heavier chores including tilling, lifting, pulling weeds and harvesting. Both would have the ability to enjoy peaceful times in the garden not to mention getting homegrown veggies as they're harvested. Sharing the burden, sharing the harvest.

The idea is a super one, but I'm about 1/2 hour away and I know that summer time would not find me time to get over there to take care of a garden. The thought of sharing a garden though seems so fun. I remember my grandparents had a huge garden that pretty much fed the neighbors, the relatives, and the animals they had. Grandpa always swore that the secret was in rototilling and no watering. He would till in between rows every other day I believe and after the seeds came up no water was put on the garden. Sometimes I think people just have a really green thumb. My thumb is white! lol
I've never even had a garden of my own that I can CAN from. I have to go to harvest stands for bulk veggies and fruit. I usually just get enough to eat fresh out of the garden.
