Well, we should have had our new mare here by now, but because of a STUPID VET, it'll be another two weeks.
When we were there looking at this mare, we noticed that her 2-week old filly had a bad gash on her right rear fetlock (on the outside). It was swollen and weeping, although it didn't look fresh, maybe 2 or 3 days old. The owner looked at it and said it looked like it was healing fine but she'd keep an eye on it for a few more days just to make sure. So we said that was fine - after all, we've waited this long for a horse, what's another few days, when a baby's welfare is involved?
So a week passed and we'd heard nothing, so Rich called and the woman explained that they'd had to get her a tetanus shot (the filly, not the owner!) and they wanted to watch her for a few more days to make sure everything was OK.
Yesterday, the phone rang and it was that lady, to tell us that her vet had prescribed penicillin shots for THREE DAYS only, almost two weeks ago (right after we saw them). She didn't even have to tell me what happened - I told her. The filly's leg got better, then it swelled up to twice its size, and now the infection is penicillin-resistant and it's in her joint! The outside of the cut is healed. So now she has to be on 2 weeks of some sulfa drug. So it won't be till after the first week in July that we get the mare (and the filly), at the soonest.
That poor baby's system will be trashed after that much trauma at such a young age. I told the lady she needed to give her some live probiotics to replace all the good bacteria that the antibiotics kill(ed). She didn't know anything about it, so I told her I'd get them and she could pay for them. As soon as mom and baby get here, I'm going to put them both on the probiotics. God knows what kind of shape the mare's in.
I just find it hard to believe that any vet would prescribe an antibiotic for only 3 days. I would have gone a completely different route, had it been my filly, but honestly, if you're going to do the antibiotic thing, at least give it long enough to kill the bacteria instead of just making them stronger.
So. We're still waiting and we still don't have Rich's horse. But as soon as we do, I'll put up some pictures.
