Well, I went and got my pig yesterday... I got one and my friend got one, so we can each have just one but raise them together. (hogs don't do well alone). I'm planning to take pics today... will post them asap. BTW they are "Herford pigs"... anyone ever hear of these? I like Herford cattle, but never heard of Herford pigs...? I named him Porkchop. ;D Kaza[/size]

Haven't heard of that kind, so would love to see pics. I love pigs. They are so cool to have. You either hate em' or love em', lol. This year we didn't get any pigs, and I really missed having them. My favorite one we called "Harley Hog" she was a Yorkshire. I use to go to her pen everyday and run the length of it, and she would run with me inside her pen. About two laps and she would collapse just a panting, and then I would hose her off. One day she got out of her pen, and ran toward me. I took off running yelling for the kids to get the feed bucket. Thought the darn pig was going to eat me! I was faster then Harley when she was in the pen, but dang that pig was fast even though she weighed close to 300 lbs, lol. She passed me up when she heard the feed bucket, and I was the pig who collapse on the ground panting! roflmao

Aww, they're so cute! Homegrown bacon and pork chops are the best! ;D I have raised pigs many times but the last set went to the butcher in 2004 & were my last. I raised those alone and boy, when pigs get rowdy they have too much power to pin a person. I figured out those 3 at 300# each could do me some major damage. Enjoy them but be careful! I'd never seen hereford pigs either-they're nice looking and these guys look very healthy!

They are sure cute Kaza.
Its when they get big they are a pain. Hubby and I had both been around pigs when we were young. Boy,, he can tell you some stories... Like Herman... the kids would always take him into the house..and they would all watch TV together.. when the TV worked. Think it was about when he got to 200lbs.. they made him go live out in the pig barn. Worked for a little while. Then at 300lbs.. he learned how to ground out the hot wire. Comes up to the house, rips off the screen door to the kitchen.. leaves a present at the water heater and then went into the living room to watch TV with the boys. Needless to say that did not go over well with his mother. Happen a few more times.. and his Dad made some ham and bacon out of him. They can be really smart!

Yeah, Kaza, keep us posted on what happens, OK? Pigs are on my "to-do" list for next year, but it's going to be awfully hard to eat them when they start out being so cute. I'm naming my two Porchop and Bacon. I guess Porkchop is a pretty common name for a pig, eh? And I already know the Golden Rule: Never faint in the pig pen! Bbird, I've been told they won't eat you if you're still moving, but that could be wrong. ~Lannie

I hope to raise some more some day. We raised 2 and they are now in the freezer. I told DH I didn't want to raise any more livestock until we find a trustworthy butcher or do it ourselves. The last ones we had were the pink kind(I forgot the breed) but they were very mild mannered. They absolutely loved red velvet cake. Our local restaurant had a surplus of cake once and gave it to us. The pigs loved it and they looked so cute with their red noses from the food dye in the cake!

nice future bacon you got there. I love apple cured bacon
My mother had some hog horror stories as well.
When she was 14 a momma sow had a litter and she died. All the piglets were given away but two my mom was very fond of right off the bat. She bottle fed them etc. Then although she was real country girl she couldnt bring herself to let them slaughter them.
A couple years later and they were like dogs. She could let them out and theyd follow her around etc.
Well she was 16 and just met my dad. She was all infatuated and had neglected to spend time playing with the pigs for a few days. Just time for food and water etc.
Well my dad came to get her for their first date. Mom had a new dress on and was all pertied up and they left. That evening when she came home and was getting a hug and peck on the cheek at the front door the pigs came barrelling around the corner and put my dad on the hood of the car. They heard her and broke out looking for her when they pulled up. From that day on the pigs hated my dad. PaPaw said it was funniest thing he ever saw.
Mom cried herself to sleep she was so embarrassed. But he came back and they got hitched and had me. Divorced after twenty four years though. PaPaw was listening to mom talk about how things didnt work out the year after they divorced and said "you shoulda listened to those pigs"
