If you had to use animal power to work on the farm or get around.... What would you like to use?
Would you think it would be more easy to have ...
Oxen Fairly easy to train when started very young. Good animals are gentle, very sturdy, and pretty easy to learn how to work with. Very little start up costs. Equipment is not as spendy as other draft animals.
Draft horses Have more power than most other animals available, however they need larger spaces and more food to keep them going. Can be hard to find a farrier that can do draft hooves. Can be the one with the most spendy start up costs. Good working harness can get pretty spendy. Can be hard on fencing.
Smaller Draft all around horse like Haflinger or Fjords Smaller animals require less feed and room...tend to be easier to handle than their big counter parts. Can be used on medium to smaller farms.
Large Goats... Can be interesting to train but can be used for medium to small farms. Easy to feed, pretty easy to care for. Can be hard to fence. There are places to get scaled down plows and such for them. Start up price is cheaper that some others.
All can be used for Field, skidding, getting to town. Good fertilizer is an added plus for the fields and gardens.
I have always wanted a pair of small breed of very well trained polled Oxen. Though having "Goat Carts" does have its appeal.

Does Dufus qualify? lol
That is a hard question, I don't have experience with oxen or horses so would be intimidated at first I am sure. I have experience with goats but I'm not sure how easy it would be to have them help plow, lol.

Well, having had at one time or another the Draft horse (clydstale and a belgiun) and a couple haflingers... have had goats trained to harness and even a sled dog team, I'd have to say that a pair of oxen would be neat to have. Not sure how much fun they'd be when not working them tho... lol Kaza[/size]
