Took the pigs in last night. One of them weighed 230 lbs. & the other weighed 200 lbs. We are gettign the biggest on e& my sister bought the smaller one. Can't wait to have the fresh meat in the freezer. I got my knee smashed loading the darn things. They are the most stubborn animal I have ever seen! I plan on getting a couple more in March or April to feed out over the summer & butcher this fall.

;D Fresh, homegrown pork is the best!! Do you have the bacon cured & smoked? That is probably the very best part of homegrown pork-bacon that tastes like the bacon I remember as a child. Don't forget to save some for BLT's once the fres grown tomatoes come in this summer! Enjoy Wendy, I hope your knee is just bruised and not hurt worse.

Terri, if you've got the room, secure fencing and a shelter-you really should try raising your own at least one time.
I miss having my own pork-the stuff from the stores is so flavorless once you've had the homegrown kind.
I love those nice homegrown pork chops, ribs on the grill, bacon and sausage the best but all of the cuts are good. I'm just not a big fan of ham either storebought or my own.

I don't like store bought ham either, but our ham is so different I love it.
Wendy- You are brave to load them yourself. Just moving ours was a pain...they are the most stubborness animal, lol. I'm sure if anyone witnessed our family moving the pigs, they would have laughed their heads off cause we looked so stupid!
Enjoy your pork!

I had help loading them, but at the time I got smashed I was in the pen alone.
I am getting bacon, jowl, ribs, pork chops, sausage, roasts, ham steaks, ham, & I am sure I am forgetting something.

Are you having the shoulders kept as roasts or sliced into pork steak? That's the only other thing I can think of on a pig other than the hocks-I loved pickled pork hocks! Oh, do you render out the lard?

I leave them roasts.
They render the lard for me.

I found on the local sales board some pigs. A sow and 3 piglets for $175.00. I would love to have organic homegrown pork. I would also like to learn how to render lard.
