Those are very beautiful birds. How do you keep predators from sneaking in and grabbing a few? I noticed some are in kennels and there's a pyr but in those pasture type arrangements; I'd be afraid coons, skunks, weasals or flying predators would get some. Again, those are some of the nicest looking birds I've seen in a long time.

I've only seen one place years ago who had those A-frame shelters, and it was a c*ck fighting breeder and each rooster was tied to the frame. I think it's illegal now over here because I notice the man doesn't have chickens anymore. Do you fight your birds, is that the reason for the A-frames? That is a lot of work to feed and water at each shelter, bet it took a lot of your day up.
Seeing all the chickies tugs at my heart. This is the first year I didn't get any. I was getting 300 chicks every 3 months for a couple years and selling them. Just too much work for me, and I got burnt out, but there is something about the little chicks that I just loved, lol.
Good looking birds! Love the dog too, lol.

When I lived in Redmond, a lot of people used these A-frames (only bigger) for their emus, which they raised for meat. I think they're just there to provide a little shade if needed, and protection from any heavy downpours, but I don't know, I'm just guessing. Am I close, TB?

I do have the occasional critter get in the fowl yard. But I ran the 2x4x6ft dog wire around the yard. Its about two inces off the ground. I have the wire insulated from the metal poles and the whole thing is electrified. That keeps most four legged critters out with the help of the dogs.
I gave up on pyrennes. Had many but they just arent active enough to suit me. For half the feed of three lgd pyrennes I have installed 6 rat russells(rat terrier jack russel crosses) they cover more area there being 6 of them and they are fearless and dont hesitate to tackle a nosey coon or possum that comes along. And they will bark at snakes and hawks too.
Oddly enough these days I lose more to two legged animals than four. A yellow flashing contruction light at each corner keeps the owls in check. Hawks usually cause the fowl to raise the alarm and that alerts the dogs etc. SO they arent bad. I keep a feeder out in the edge of the woods with shelled corn in it and the crows keep them in check too.
No I dont fight chickens. Did in my youth as dad and grandpa did and grtgrandpa too. Grt grandpa originated three breeds now known worldwide in c*cking circles.
I breed and sell to clients in Mexico and Philippines. What they do with them after they leave here is none of my business. I do give away quite a few to 4h etc.
The real money is in broodfowl. You have to have foundation stock and folks will pay 1000 plus for those. I also sell to people who show poultry.
Back in the day we won cocker of the year at four different pits. That is maintaining the highest win percentage over a season. At Sunset we won a new gmc and 30 grand for cocker of the year.
How a derby works
You pay entry fee usually 250-500. They weigh your fowl and put a tag on then with a number They draw a random number in the weight class to within one ounce and thats who you meet. At the end of the day whoever has the highest number of wins out of 5 is declared the winner and gets 100 percent of all the entry fees. This can reach 100entries at 500 a piece or for one days work a total of 50 thousand dollars.
It is a very technical sport there is a rule book that is 70 pages long. You have top abide by those rules or you forfeit.
I have a client named Nene Abello in Manila that paid my way over there to spend two weeks exercising and feeding his cocks and he won the World Slasher Derby and my ten percent was 16 thousand dollars. That was in 97. Its basically the world series of c*cking.
I pay taxs on winnings etc and yeah its listed where I got it.
Here is a video made at Araneta in the Pi's. It doesnt show fighting but the thousands of people trying to place bets etc. Araneta is big enough it holds about 6thousand people for the big derbys. You will see hundreds of thousands of dollars swapping hands in a day there. Look at the size of this state of the art coliseum and youll see there is big big money involved. To them its a national pass time like baseball is here
