My guineas had started laying eggs about a month ago, and were up to 3 or 4 a day, all laid in the coop, when the last winter blast hit us. Then they quit laying. Even now that the weather's been nice for the last week (almost), I've only found two eggs, and someone suggested it was probably the cold weather setting them back, rather than my first thought of "Someone's stealing our eggs so we'd better find a better place to hide them!"
Well, this morning, I heard a guinea out behind the wood pile next to the barn, so I went to see if maybe there were any eggs over there (I forgot to look there before). I found the stash, I think. There's a pile of old scrap lumber behind the woodpile (the old rotten chicken house that we tore down a couple years ago), and lo and behold, waaaaay back under some of the boards in an open spot on the ground is a guinea. There was one egg practically next to where I was standing, and another one way back by the guinea under the boards, and I don't know how many UNDER her! I think they've been going under there and laying for the last two weeks or so, and there's probably a huge pile by now. Grrrrr.... I do NOT need more guineas! LOL!
So I guess we have another project for this afternoon. Go out and move enough of that old lumber so I can get in there and retrieve those eggs.
I'm worried because normally if I was looking that closely at one of the guineas, they'd quack and screech, but this clever girl was hunkered down, watching me sideways and not making a sound. Hmmm....

Have to giggle,, while I do not have guineas,,I do have some bantams that are totally bent on adding to the population. Luckily,,this time,,,they are at least smart enough to do it in the hen house. Though I did find a major pile tucked near the corner of the house behind the Grape vine planter..good 2 dozen...Though that was before they decided the hen house is better. Of course,,my son is supposed to be checking for eggs......sigh ~~
Sounds like they are keeping things interesting for you!! Just think,,the tiny patter of wee guinea feet. <VBG>

Oy, vey! I just went out there to see if the guinea had gotten off the nest (she had) and there have to be at LEAST a dozen eggs in that nest, if not two dozen. They've hollowed out a bowl in the dirt under there and it's FULL! I guess any of them that aren't cracked due to freezing will go in a really big omelette tomorrow! Now I'm wondering if the chickens haven't started hiding theirs... They always lay in the coop, but yesterday I only got one, today none, and they've been few and far between for the last few days, come to think of it. I just got a new batch of chicks, so I don't need them hatching any out, and I REALLY don't want 30 guineas on this place! I barely have room for the 10 we have. I can just see the conversation now. Me: Um, Rich? I think you need to build a bigger chicken coop. Rich: HUH? What the heck for? Me: For all those new guineas that just hatched. They need to spend the winter somewhere, I can't just let them die outside in the cold! Rich: Okay, where'd I leave my shotgun? ~Lannie

OK, we moved the lumber pile and there were 26 eggs under there! None of them were cracked due to freezing. I only have 10 guineas and some of them are boys, so either the girls are laying more than one a day, or they've been collecting them under there for a week or more, in which case at least some of them should have been frozen. Weird...
So I guess tomorrow we're having scrambled eggs or giant omelettes for breakfast. Or maybe I should make a souffle for dinner. Or BOTH! LOL!

I don't know if I would eat those eggs or not. I'm having premonitions of little slimy chicks....Eeeeewwwwwwww! At least you found the nest...My ducks have decided that the neighbors boat is a wonderful nest box....And the eggs keep rolling down...And there's about 20 of them, all rotten. Yummy....

I was thinking about the same thing Cricket is. Me,, I tossed all the ones that they piled up!! Am to chicken...... to even try to candle them! I know..very whimpy of me. Guinea eggs must be tougher,,because when the bantam eggs get piled up..they always crack. And they have thick egg shells for chickens.
That is cute Cricket,,,that is a prefect nest box for water lovers!! <LOL>

Aww, you guys just don't know how to live dangerously! They've been there for less than a week, none were cracked, and they were DELICIOUS! Well, the ones we've eaten so far, anyway. I made biscuits and scrambled guinea eggs for breakfast, and we're having that tomorrow and the next day, too. I made a lot of biscuits, and have a big bowl of eggs! Those yolks are so orange, though! Man, the scrambled eggs practically glow in the dark! LOL! ~Lannie
