I have to leave the 3 big sissies in the house today cause it's storming. I've NEVER left them alone during thunder storms. Not by design, just worked out that way. 2 of them are HORRIBLY afraid of lightening. Bella's been struck twice! Wonder if work would understand taking a "sick" day for psychotic dogs?

I'd be scared to if I was struck twice! My dog is also scared of storms but I have to go to work. If I know ahead of time I will crumble up some treats and put a small amout of children's Benadyl (I have Bubble Gum flavor) over the treats. My vet told me this was OK it may not be OK for any dog. I hate it when I am gone and it starts storming because I know she doesn't have anything to calm her. I don't know what she called herself doing last night! When I got home from work I walked into the kitchen. She had somehow opened one of the cabnet doors and pulled out some plastic containers (used for leftovers, soups, etc). I don't know how in the world she did that! But when it storms she does crazy things like that. One time she sredded a pillow. That is why I try to give her something to calm her. I must not have given her enough Benadryl yesterday.

Juju - no she didn't and I have no idea why. Usually they blow their coat or have burns in strange places but she never did. She was pretty wacked out the first time. It was Easter and the WHOLE family was here and it started storming. Afterwards, she would drool like crazy, bark at nothing, walk like someone bonked her in the head...stuff like that. Nothing permanent though, thankfully. The second time wasn't as severe and if I hadn't seen it happen, I would question whether or not it had really struck her. She was pretty dizzy and would jump up and yelp for no "reason" for about a week after. Her poop never changed, her appitite was fine. Anyway, the only lasting thing is that she is absolutely terrified of bad weather. If it's just storming, she'll try to get under the bed. If it's getting really bad, she gets into the bathtub...go figure.

Oh yeah...forgot...They did fine while I was gone. It never really got stormy. Just some thunder and some rain. So all of my furniture is still intact and they didn't get stuck under the bed....

My parents had a Shar-Pei that would freak out in storms. When she'd get frightened, she'd go up instead of down.
So rather than diving under the bed or running to the basement, she'd climb up on the bathroom vanity or the headboard of the bed (one of those headboards that holds books in a built-in shelf). She was waaay too big to be up on that stuff but she was petrified so the couldn't get mad at her for it.
