I don't know what to do but this is getting serious. My three 8 mo old kittens/cats have started yanking on anything plugged into an electric outlet. They have plenty of toys, stuffies and playthings so it's not due to boredom. The scary part is they will unplug something 1/2 way which is just asking for a fire. I can't unplug everything in the apartment every time I leave a room and some things are really difficult to reach like the TV & cable box cord behind the entertainment center. Any suggestions on how to break them of this potentially deadly habit? Since it's at the outlets; a spray bottle of water doesn't seem like a good idea.

I don't know I have never heard of a cat or animal doing that.
You can put those safety holders in the sockets but the cat is pulling things out of the plugs?
I hope someone comes up with an answer.

I heard the stereo making odd 'off & on' noises this morning. I went over to check it and out ran a cat from behind the entertainment center and the plug was halfway out. Later, while I was in the bathroom, they did the same thing with the TV. I've found lamps with the plugs pulled halfway out too. I bent the prongs out a little so the plugs fit really tight in the sockets-and I actually caught one with her little mouth around it pulling like a puppy does with a sock!! They were turning off my surge protector for the computer so I had to duct tape the switch so it would stay on. But I can't duct tape every plug into the outlet especially since this is a rental!! This is the first time I've ever encountered cats with this particular electric plug fetish.

If it wasn't so dangerous it would be funny.
I wonder how people with kids handle this problem?
You know some kids might do this when they start crawling.

Put double sided tape on the wires and also the kid proof covers on the outlets. Good luck
Oh, and try a good spray bottle with water in it when you catch them at it. Aim for the cat...not the outlet.
There is cord tubing that you put around your wires and it's supposed to keep the wires out of the way...that should keep them from playing with the cords. You can usually find it at places like Office Depot.
If I think of any others, I'll holler back.

Kathy, if it's of any consolation, my cat did the same thing when she was about your cats' age. She eventually quit, although she almost didn't live to tell about it (she was either going to electrocute herself or get strangled by me ). DH's cat (who's 6 or 7 years younger) also had a fascination with cords for a while and also has outgrown it, so there is hope for you. It wouldn't be pretty, but could you tape the cord to the wall/outlet? It would prevent them from being able to pull on it. Maybe you could put something on the cords like pepper or something that would smell or taste bad to them? Vinegar, maybe? Good luck. /VM
