I'm going to start Jade in Tracking. First I have to get her a harness, though. It's been a long time since I've trained a dog to track.... this outta be fun!

She's a fast learner, but we're taking it slow to get it right. I'm starting with Serpentine turns. (it makes teaching turns easier later on). She seems to have a "clue" that there's something about sniffing for the treats, but it'll take a while before it truley clicks. So far, so good!

Well, we started training officially. It's only been 3 sessions, and she's starting to slow down a bit. The first day, she just ran like crazy, scooping up the treats. The second day, I did them in a serpintine and slightly around the corner of a fence where she could not see them all, she slowed down to find them. the third day she slowed even more. One problem so far is that when she hits the end of the track, she grabs the glove, gets the treat and then refuses to believe there's not "more treats" all over. Will she figure out that there's not? I use the "Go Find" command when I set her off to track, and "all done, good girl" when she has found the glove and the track is finished.
Comments anyone?

What is serpintine ?
For our hounds, we always use a drag with lion scent on it.

I should have known that. Thanks
You know you said you were looking for a second job, maybe you could start training dogs from your home. This sounds like something you enjoy. I know there is some money that can be made. Some of the Bird dog people around here, send their dogs off for months at a time and pay some high dollar for the training.
Or would that be a problem with the kids ?

I do train an occassional dog for people. There's not a big population around here to work with actually. Years ago when I lived downstate, I raised, trained and showed dogs for a living. I had my own, as well as those I handled and trained for other people. Made good money down there at it, but wouldn't be the same up here.

This is really interesting. I am trying to think of new things to teach my dog. I think I am going to ask my dad about this. To see if he can help me come up with something. OK stupid questian, don't laugh OK? ;D Are you talking about tracking people eventually or teaching the dog to hunt (like my dad has taught all his dogs to hunt) OK now you can laugh.

Tracking people. I hunt, but mainly deer. Here it's against the law for a dog to 'run deer'. I used to hunt pheasant, but there aren't enough up here to hunt. Lot of quail (too small for my likin) and turkeys tho. (yummy!!)
Jade's learning to track mainly for something we can do together that I enjoy.... and it's appearing that she likes it to. I keep thinking one day maybe I can get her cert. for S&R, but my main reason for training is for the fun of it. I like agility, but not only do I not have room here for the equiptment, but her size and age lends me to not wanting her to jump on/off anything. I will probably get a colapsable tunnel etc to play around with.
One thing that is also fun (but your dog has to be rather "ball crazy" is... Flyball. Now that's a riot!! and heck... I have 3/4 of a team all by myself. lololol. Well, other than Shilo, he's in no hurry for anything, so I'll say I have 1/2 a team. lol.
There's so many fun things to do with dogs... sledding, weight pulling, agility, hunting, Obedience, tracking, flyball, herding, frisbee.... it's hard to stick to one at a time... lol.

Jade's learning quickly... but is still "treat crazy". (a puppy treat crazy, go figure) Soon, I'll try to get a picture of my lil sidekick in action...
