How did you go about naming your pet?
Did you look in a baby name book?
Did your kids or family pick out the name?
Was it a pet name of a pet you had as a child?

The kids named ours. Funny story, but I have a male cousin who has five dogs and just recently got married (for the third time, lol) all his dogs have names of old girlfriends/wives. They are all female dogs too, so they had a little reception at their house and someone asked about the dogs. The new wife said "Oh that is Janie, Pamela, Donna, Linda and Eva." Then she got this grin on her face, and says "They are all @itches too!" You could have heard a pin drop, until his new wife started laughing really hard then the whole crowd just busted a gut.

I've never looked in a name book. I just see the puppy and pick a name that "suits it".
My son named Shilo.... (and to this day the name fits him)
Jessee I named, because even as a pup he was a lil renegade. lol
And Jade, well ya'll know the "Jake" story... When I got Jade, I was not only in LOVE with the name Jake, and had suddenlt gotten a female instead of a male.. my son said I was "jaded".... then I thought.. what a perfect name for the pup! Jade. hehehe And, Jade is her name.

Last fall when I first took my new kitten to the vet, I hadn't given her a name yet, so just called her "Cat" on her records, but then she eventually became "Kitty Cat". People laugh at me about that, for they say it's not a real name, but it's too late to change it now because that is the name she responds to. I am just not very original with names. I know a guy who named his purebred dog, "Dog". I thought that was sweet. Deb

We have a Briard (french sheep herding dog) and his name is Louie. I wanted a french name for a french dog. I favored Renoir and Matisse but DH said all the other dogs would beat him up if we named him a frilly name like that, so he's Louie. We have a German Shepherd named Rolf. A fine upstanding German name. We had a Scottish Fold cat named Angus. DH favored Haggis but I couldn't stomach that name. We had a small silver tabby named Piccolo (small and silver, get it?). We usually study the animals and toss names out for a few days before settling in on one. And invariably the names get bastardized. For example, when Angus got grossly fat he got the nickname "HangGuts" ;D

I name my pets after people I like or admire.
My Cocker spaniel - a little black Petite cocker - is named Sophie Tucker after the Bette Midler character. and believe me, if fits Sophie's personality. But here nick name. I was travelling through Hannibal, MO about 2 months after I got Sophie and saw a sign that said Puddin' Head Wilson. I started signing that over and over to a tune I made up, and from that point on her nickname has been Puddin' Head!! And she responds to it!!!

LOL, Don! I had a dog once that thought his name was "Stoooo-pid!" We usually take a few days (or weeks) to find a name for ours, too. The names reflect something of their personality. Our most recent acquisition, a cat, is called Pippin, after the Hobbit. Because he's always hungry and has a knack for finding trouble. We originally were calling him Oddball because he has one blue eye and one green eye, but Pippin just seems to fit him better, so we changed it after a couple of weeks. ~Lannie
