I know it's too soon for Mojo to really know his name, and I am also finding that I say NO a lot. I use "AH" as a no command, but didn't realize I do say NO at time too and it rhymes with Mo. Confused yet? lol I don't want to confuse the poor pup and to make matters worse, dh forgets his name is Mo and says Bo half the time. So yesterday I called the puppy Dufus because it ran into the step of the deck. I said "You silly Dufus!" and he got so excited. So during the day, everytime I called him Dufus he came right to me. Last night dh was out with him and it was raining so the pup ran over and got under his car (that won't be happening much longer because he won't fit, lol) and dh was calling and calling his name and he wouldn't come out from under the car. I stepped out on the deck and yelled "Hey Dufus, come Dufus and the little guy ran clear across the lawn to me. Just cracked us both up. So do you think I should change it's name, and do you think he will have a complex being called Dufus? (that's sort of a joke) For anyone who has been around a St. Bernard they are big goofy giants and the name really sums up his personality.

I think Dufus is a GREAT name! I had a dog once that thought his name was Stupid Dog (can you guess why he thought that?), and he didn't mind a bit. Sometimes I think that animals respond to a name (or just a sound) that sounds like their "real" name, if you know what I mean. Every once in a while, Rich or I will use a word that really gets one of the dogs excited, but that doesn't sound like "cookie." LOL! (Funny little sidebar here: Once I got really mad about something and used the f-word really loud, and Thumper came running up wagging his tail thinking we were going somewhere in "the truck." We used to tell him "Go get in the truck!" when we were taking him somewhere.) So I have to agree on the "sound-alike" part. I've noticed lately that when I call out the back door for Pippin, the chickens all come running. Well, duh, say Pippin and Chicken out loud - they sound very much the same. Too late to rename either Pippin or the chickens, though, so I'll just have to deal with my problem. I should have thought of that before. Anyway, if Mo responds to Dufus better, why not call him Dufus? It's definitely a very cute name, and will probably fit him for most of his life, don't you think? And it sounds better than Stupid Dog! LOL! ~Lannie

That is too cute! Dogs are so funny, lol.
Our dogs can tell when we spell out bath and go and hide under the bed. We have rhymed words with bath like path, lath, dath and it doesn't get a rise out of the dogs but say bath or spell it and they go hide.
Funny how some dogs just pick their own names, and I think Dufus is telling us it's a good name. :-)

Lucky goes spastic when I even say 'brush'. For some reason he thinks he's supposed to kill the brush! If I leave it on the floor for even a second; he's off with it and the chase is on! I agree that pets seem to respond to a name that isn't always the one we choose. I don't think having their names changed affects them too much; I've never fostered a dog that had a name so each one had to adjust to their new name. All of them did just fine. I never thought about Mo and No before but that sure might confuse him. Dufus is a cool name! Not every other dog will have the same name ad him at the vets office!

Oh man, I didn't think of the vets. That will be too funny to change his name. Although last time we were there I heard a man, no less, bring his big rotwiller (sp) in and call it Rosebud, lol. That made me smile.

I love that name! I also think he is telling you that is the name he likes. Mo sounds so much like NO. That name just seems to fit him.
My sister once had a cat named DC (his real name was D*mn Cat).
So, OK bbird - we all agree! LOL (now we (as a group) are helping name our children?)

Yep, it's always good to get help. Wouldn't want any of the "kids" to have self esteem problems getting saddled with a name other "kids" will make fun of them for. lol
Next vet appt. is monday, I'm anxious to see how much he weighs now. I swear he is huge for his age.

Dufus is a great name! (Any name that makes the dog actually respond is a great name, imo. ;D ) A woman I used to work with had a Rottweiler mix named Peaches. /VM

Just got back from Dufus's 9week old shots. He now weighs 21 1/2 lbs!! that's 9 1/2 lb weight gain in 3 weeks, lol. I knew he was starting to look like he was twice as big as when we got him.
It was kind of funny but when we checked in, I said Mojo is here, but we changed his name. She asked what his new name is and when I said Dufus, the whole waiting room starting cracking up. Last time we took him he slept the whole time in our arms and this time he was a holy terror on four legs. Wanted to play with every dog there, and run around. I am so glad I put the halter on him because that was the only thing that kept him by me. Silly dog.
The vet wants to kidnap him, thinks he is the most loveable lug of a dog.
Oh, there were two people there in the waiting room that have these little tiny dogs that you carry around in purses. The other people thought it would be a great idea to buy the biggest luggage carrier with wheels for Dufus, lol. I could just picture that!
I'm so glad we got Dufus, is turning out to be a great dog. Even knows how to shake with his paw, and did it on command with the vet. Unlike children, dogs at least can be showoff's at the doctors, lol.

Deb, Dufus sounds like he's got a healthy appetite! ;D He's going to be a really big boy. When will we be getting some new pics?? After all, I'm not sure I've ever seen a 21+ # nine week old puppy!

I'm hoping this week is a lot calmer then the last two weeks and I get those little things done that I need to do. I do have to gush about a cute thing he does. When one of us is splitting kindling he sits and watches and when one piece will fly off he runs over and picks the stick up and takes it into his dog house. He has about 12 pieces stored in there! I've never had a dog that collected things. Besides the kindling pieces he also takes leaves in there, rocks, and his toys.

Aww, he's just being a well prepared pup. He's getting ready for winter too! Wood, insulating material and toys-all things a pup needs to be comfy. I can't wait till I have a larger safe spot for Lucky to just be a dog. He's got the back yard but there's no wood cutting or egg collecting going on or trails for him to explore. He did seem to enjoy it when I swept leaves; he ran right through the pile!
