I am having a hard time today. My little cocker spaniel, Sophie, was killed in a dog fight over the weekend. I had to say goodbye to her last night after we got home from the weekend at my daughter's. Sophie was my best friend, at times the only friend I had. She loved to travel, loved to run on our ranch, and was always sooo happy to see me when I got home from work. I have a big hole in my heart today. Sophie was the most wonderful companion and faithful friend a man could ask for. I miss her terribly. She would have been 4 years old December 29. Above is a pic of Sophie at our Homesteaders Campout in September. gonna take a while to get over her. Don

I am so so sorry Don. It's a terrible thing to handle a dog's death, and one I am not very good at. Your memories are one's to be cherished though. Big hugs to you!

Oh Don, I'm so sorry! I noticed Sophie in the homesteader camp pics because she looked just like my ChiChi. She looked like she had the same sweet disposition that ChiChi had and it will take a while to get over the loss. It's been 2 yrs since I had to have ChiChi put to sleep at age 14 and I still get teary eyed. Try to remember the good times and know she had a good, well loved life with you for those 4 yrs. btw, Was the dogfight with strays or your own dogs?

Sadly, the fight was with our other dog. they were getting along with each other so well. that makes it even harder.

It has been 3 weeks, and I swear I hear Sophie everytime I step outside and look toward the spot where she is buried. It seems anytime I look that direction, the leaves on the ground are rustling but nothing is there. I believe she is still here watching over me!

Hey Don, I understand how you must feel. A couple of years ago we had to have a much-loved German Shepherd named Kato (named after the Green Hornet character, NOT OJ Simpson's deadbeat friend) put down. That was a lot like having to pull the plug on one of the kids and still hurts when I remember the details. Like you, I could almost see him whenever I'd look at one of his favorite 'laying-around' spots. Whenever I come across a reminder of him like an old chewed toy it still causes a small 'catch' but it's usually followed by a smile. In time the hurt will temper a bit and you'll remember all the good about Sophie. Who knows? Maybe there really is something like that Rainbow Bridge story and we'll all see each of our pets again someday.
