When I 'introduced' Bachelor and Pepper in another post I said I'd tell about how Bachelor came to be with us so here goes. . . . .
When Toad (daughter) was a senior in college she called home one evening and in the course of the conversation became quiet for a bit, then said, "Mom, Dad, I have to tell you something and you're not going to like it." Wonder Woman and I exchanged these 'Oh $#!^' looks and after a VERY deep breath I said, "OK Hon, what is it?" She said, "Well, I uh, adopted a dog from the Humane Society!" Long sighs of sweet relief!! She said he was a Schnauzer/Terrier mix. I'd never had much use for small yappy dogs so when she brought him home for Christmas break I was prepared to dislike him. It took him about 30 minutes to win Wonder Woman and me over. He just makes people smile when he's around. He does have a high-pitched bark, but he seldom barks so that was tolerable. He was an aggressive little turd, though. As soon as Pepper came up to check him out Bachelor went right after him. Pepper's a 'lover not a fighter' so he retreated and just waited until the intruder and Toad left to go back to school.
Lo and behold, a few months later Toad decided she wasn't able to give Bachelor enough attention and was going to have to give him up. She was very involved with school, sorority, various organizations, and a couple of jobs. The quintessential 'joiner'. A friend from St. Louis County took Bachelor home to see if he'd fit in there and came back empty-handed saying everybody loved him and he fit right in. Couple weeks later Toad's vet there in Springfield was contacted by St. Louis Co. Animal Control saying they'd picked Bachelor up and traced his vaccination tag to the vet. Toad told her friend to have her family go get him from the 'pound'. A few days later she was contacted saying the dog hadn't been picked up and if he wasn't claimed in two or three days he'd either be put down or put up for adoption. I get this frantic call at work from Toad about the sad state of affairs. Sigh!! So dear 'ol Dad burned a sick day to go get the little mongrel out of hock. A 75 - 80 mile round trip and NINETY DOLLARS later he's ours. We've gotten to really love the little pooch despite him being a 'bit' destructive at first. He seems to have outgrown most of that now and has calmed down quite a bit. So far, the ONLY thing I've found that he won't eat is mushrooms. Radishes, turnips, onions, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, you name it, he loves it. He and Pepper are best buddies now so that's worked out, too. We do have to take him out on a leash since he's an unreformed 'roamer' and around here, either the road or the coyotes would get him in short order. His pic is in my other thread titled 'Here They Are' if you want to see what he looks like. We've really come to love him and are really glad he wound up with us, even through the rough early stages. Later I'll tell about him attacking #1 Son's 180lb. Newfoundland.
