Dufus stinks!! He has had two baths in his short little life, but it's kind of hard to do with the weather not cooperating since we have to keep him in the house to dry and don't want to do that when its too cold out. When he was littler he had hay and a big blanket in his dog house. He decided he didn't want the blanket in the house, so we kept fresh hay only in there. A couple weeks ago he then decided that he doesn't want hay, so we took a old rug and screwed it down in his dog house and he seems happy enough but he stinks!! I thought maybe it was the blanket or the hay making him stink, but I just think he is a stinky dog, lol. He doesn't itch or lick himself, so it's not that causing the stink. I haven't seen him roll in the chicken poop, lol. He just smells like a outside dog....but worse! How do you keep a dog smelling "fresher"? Do you think it is because of the weather? To bad they don't make air freshners that were safe to hang around his neck!!

That's a tough one. I wonder if any of the dry powdered 'rub-in/brush-out' things would help? I've also seen products in spray bottles (Zero-Odor?) that claim to chemically neutralize odors, but I don't know if they are for use on animals or just carpets or bedding. Sorry I can't be of much help.

Sorry for the 2X post. Now how did that happen? Darryl, if that happens you can go to the right hand side of your second post and there's a little X delete option. You can just delete the second post-I did it for you. Sometimes duplicate posts happen here-no one seems to know why. It was nothing you did-just a Proboards hiccup.

Try a "pillow" filled with cedar chips. Helps the stink and deters fleas.

You know I thought about that Kaza, but then figured it would get ruined pretty fast with him in the habit of dragging out blankets and hay from inside his house. But I wonder if laying on cedar chips would be okay for him. If he did make a mess with it, that is okay. Hmmm....might just try that. Also need to make him a bigger dog house this summer. He hasn't outgrown his doghouse but it's just an extra large plastic kennel type house so it's small for him. That alone might keep the odor up, instead of having more air circulating in a bigger house.

That's what us ladies are here for, you see...we routinely pass the stick around to beat you guys over the head....just to help you, you know! No teasing, but I think something is weird with the whole internet. Things have been strange. Some forums are slower then molasses and others are faster then normal. Forums that use to be here, are not here anymore. I would think it was just me losing my mind, but that can't be right....can it?

Waterless shampoos.... mostly sold at feed stores. Comes in powder or spray form...used for those winter months. Works on horses and dogs very well. If you want...can find the links to them later.

Never heard of this stuff before...cool! I have a couple farm catalogues sitting on my desk. I'll have to look and see if they have it in there. Thanks Bergere!

But he is so cute, does people really notice the stinky? I love that photo of him over the fence.

Thanks Starfire!
He's becoming less stinky, lol. Keeping the blanket and hay out of his dog house is helping. Either that or his decision to start sleeping on the deck by the front door is helping. Being outside in the breeze whisks the smell downwind at least, lol.

Usually smell is from feed. What are you feeding? If it's grocery store stuff, chances are you won't have a very good smelling dog. I won't go into the reasons why that food is a bad choice here...
If you're feeding a good/premium food and he still smells...Could be a couple of things. Have you expressed his anal glands? Is it really dry there? Dry skin can cause serious smells. Also, rampant staph infections can be RANK....And ifhe has lots of fur, you wouldn't notice it until he lost hair.
Add plain yogurt/kefir to his food...Along with either fish oil or flax seed oil. You might also want to add an egg a couple of times a week. Is there anywhere you can get raw goat's milk? About 1/2 cup a day for a little while can also help.
Solid gold also makes a supplement called (?) MSG...It has kelp and yucca and all sorts of wonderful things in it. It can really help...Especially if you're feeding a low grade food.
Oh, and check his ears. Wash out with apple cider vinegar and cotton ball... If you get any yellow-y stuff out, you have a bacterial infection. If it's redish brown, you have mites....and follow with a couple of drops of Frontline.
