Dirty, does it appear to be an umbilical hernia or a testicular one?
All I know about umbilical hernias is what to do on a baby. As long as it's small, I was taught to put a gauze pad over the hernia and then tape a half doller over the guaze. It was supposed to keep the hernia from 'popping' out until a doctor could check it out.
If you do that to a dog though, you would probably want to carefully shave the hair in the area.
Is this your beautiful Golden Lab?

Is this your beautiful Golden Lab? yeap, Sam. looks like an umbilical hernia. i don't really know for sure. the only hernia i've ever seen was on a cat at the shelter. someone there had to tell me what it was or i'd have never known.

I thought our oldest dog had a hernia, because when she layed on her back I could see a lump right below her ribs in the middle of her tummy. It was a little bigger then a marble, but when I felt around it, I couldn't feel around the bump to tell if it was round or what. It was squishy like a water balloon, and I thought it was a hernia, but the vet said it was a fatty cyst. Said it was a common spot for dogs.
Then years and years ago we had a little puppy that had a hernia on his belly button. The vet said we had to watch it, and we also had to keep pushing it down, not letting the puppy bark too much and it healed itself without surgery.
Those are the only experiences I have, and I know it didn't help much but I sure hope Sam is okay. Its hard not to worry about our pets. Let us know what you find out though.

Sorry Dirty, I haven't got anything to add that the others haven't already said. I'll keep you and Sam in my thoughts for the best. Sure it's not just all that Holiday eating poppin his belly out? That appears to be what happened to "my" belly. Keep us informed about how it goes, will ya? Kaza

well sam's vet visit went well. the vet said it was a growth of fatty tissue, not to uncommon in dogs his age(8).
oh yea and i got the "he's overweight lecture". guess they had to give me something for my forty-two dollars.
the people i got him from two and a half years ago were going to put him to sleep.
So, i say he doesn't smoke. he doesn't drink. and years ago someone cut off his n*t*. i think he should at least be able to enjoy food.

Dirty, I'm so glad Sam is ok! I can't imagine why anyone would put down a dog that looks as gentle and loving as Sam. He got lucky when you gave him a forever home and just for the record, I get the he's overweight lecture with Lucky too! Funny thing is Goldie eats the same food and treats and stays a svelt 10.9#. Give him a pet from me and the gang, I'm sure you're feeling better knowing it's nothing serious.

Glad to hear he's ok!! And for the record... I agree with ya about that he should at least be able to enjoy food. Maybe he needs one of those centerfold Dog World magazines to. Kaza
