I seen this article in the paper about Pets it had some good points. I have gone slack on some of these things myself. These are good reminders.
1. Practice good hygiene – grooming, trimming nails-prevents infections, brush teeth-avoid lose of teeth and gum disease.
2. Keep pets at the ideal weight and plenty of exercises. Obesity can lead to all kings of health problems in pets.
3. Keep pets up on shots and parasite preventives. Don’t wait until your pet is infected or infested with a parasite. That will cost you more money in the long run and your pet will be real sick.
4. Spray or neuter your pet early. You may prevent your pet from getting breast, uterine and testicular cancer. Also more pets “prowl” and are aggressive when they are not sprayed or neutered.
5. Keep cats indoors. The life expectancy of an outside cat is 3-5 years, of an inside cat 12 years.
6. Pet proof your home and yard – keep medications and chemicals out of range of the pets. Make sure gates and fences are secure and poisonous plants are out of reach.
7. Become a pet detective – Be Observant-notice any sudden changes to your pet’s habit or routine. It may be a heath problem going on with the pet. Also, Sniff-orders can be revealing; foul breath may be oral disease or diabetes. Ears should be odorless. A general order may be a sign of a skin infection.
8. Be friends with your Vet. You need your vet’s help sooner or later. The better the Vet knows your pet the better you and your pet will be. Commit to regular check-ups esp. as they get older. Ask your vet for free samples if he prescribes a new drug.
9. Is there a vet school in your area? Some offer clinics at a reduced price.
10. Most of all don’t be afraid to ask the Vet questions. You are speaking on your pet’s behalf. Don’t leave the vet office unless you have a clear understanding of your pet’s health and understand what the vet said
