Emu eggs have three layers of color. The outside of the shell is a very dark green, almost black. Beneath that is a teal or greenish color. There are around 7 paper thin layers of teal. Then you have white - and you have to be very careful when you get that far or you will go through. Carved emu eggs I did some time back.

Wow, those are beautiful!! Did you take a class in egg carving or is there a website with instructions?? I etch glass; both chemical and manual methods so this would be another form or carving I'd love to learn.

I bought a dremel tool to start with, then progressed to a high speed drill. AEA sponsors classes at the conventions sometimes: emuszine.com/wiea.htmTake a look at some of these carved eggs: www.carved-eggs.com

Very nice!! I was wondering. Forgive my ignorance but how does vinegar etching work??? The vinegar eats away any eggshell not covered by some sort of protection, like wax. I don't do much with vinegar etching, but here is an article I did for Emu's Zine on how to do basic vinegar etching emu eggs: emuszine.com/eggs/vinegar_&_wax_emu_eggs.htmThere are people who do really detailed work that is just beautiful. You would think it was carved. I think this one has kind of an oriental, ink blot feel to it. ;D

If you start with chicken eggs, get free range - the store ones are not strong enough and will break. Brown hen eggs can be etched and are beautiful.
