I have a bag of old bath towels/hand towels/washcloths that I'm just not ready to part with. Some are stained and some have holes in them. (They aren't in good enough condition to donate.) My brother has given us a sack full of shop rags so we can't use them for that. We don't have any animals and only need a couple for cleaning. What can I use them for? /VM

I wonder if you could use parts of them and make a "quilt" of sorts. Valances for bathroom windows? Make bath mits out of them?

I used old towels as the batting in pet quilts. I practiced my quilting skills by making cat quilts. ;D Old towels made great batting since it wasn't too fluffy and was definitely washable.

That's a great idea!! Especially if I can ever find that box of material my mum sent to me...it would be a good way to make use of two different "scraps" at once.

auntie, that reminds me of my mother's bathroom. She used up a bunch of fabric by making a patch shower curtain, window curtains and vanity topper. She had been collecting leftover fabric for years and I recognized fabric from dresses, pjs and doll clothes that she made throughout my childhood. It was such a good feeling to be surrounded by bits and scraps of warm memories /VM

I wonder if these new jackets from fat quarters with the seams on top and frayed would work using the old towels?
Would be cute to make a thigh length one for a bathing suit cover up or just to wear.

angie, I Googled fat quarter jackets - I've never heard of them before but they look really nice! Most of the instructions say they're easy to sew. I'm still scarred from sewing that blame needle through my finger way back when so I always look for the Easy! label on the directions ;D Hmmm...you all have me thinking now. Thanks!! /VM

I use up old towels by making kitchen rags out of them. I serge them so theywon't fray. Being a cheap person, I keep lots of them in the kitchen and use them instead of toweling.
Now, this idea is not for the absent minded. I've made long rags to cover the back of my stove where the knobs are. I also put rags on the burners I'm NOT using. I do this when frying meats. It reduces the clean up time. When the stove it cool, I uncover the stove, spray it with a cleaner and use the rags to wipe it clean.
There is a fire threat, but not if you are diligent. I've only turned the wrong burner on once in 43 years.

Ardie, you are better than me! I regularly turn on the wrong burner. I do it often enough that I stand in front of the stove and name the burner I want to turn on, then find the matching knob for that burner. Then 10 minutes later, the tea kettle I keep on the stove is whistling and the meat is still frozen I don't know what the heck my problem is but I know to ALWAYS keep water in that kettle! Using the not-so-pretty ones for cleaning is a good idea - maybe I can break DH of his paper towel addiction. I even stopped buying them altogether one time and thought I had him cured...until I found him using paper napkins to clean the bathroom I couldn't fuss because technically we WERE out of paper towels and he was trying to do something good. Sometimes I just can't win for losing! /VM

I'm a big person (big and tall) so I have a hard time finding towels that wrap around me right. Either too short to go all the way around or not as long as I like it (hits on the mini skirt level) so I sewed some old towels together and added some velcro to close and I have a 'robe' to wear when I get out of the shower to do my hair/face. I sew straight lines, but if you're more talented you can make one with arms. If you don't like the way it looks (stained etc) you can bleach the heck out of it and then toss it in with a pretty rit dye. $1-$2 vs. $25+ for a robe.
