I have a love affair with old quilts. I love to look at the stitches, sewn with love, and think about all the little pieces of material that went into the making of them, and even if they are ragged, I still keep them. I came into possession of one of my grandmothers quilts a couple years ago. She has been gone for years, but I still can feel the love in that quilt. My favorite patterns are SunBonnet Sue and Overall Sam. I have lots of patterns for these two, and every one of the grandbabies and the great grands have baby quilts that I made for them or had made if I didn't have the time to get them done. I have a postage stamp quilt, tiny, tiny squares. It is machine made, and it is so old, the patches are fading. Another one that I came into possession of is one made from old Jeans. It is very interesting. All sizes, the full pair of pants, sewn onto a material background, from little jeans to full size ones, and a few fancy stitches put on the seams. I have a friend who has one made out of beautiul old lace handkerchiefs. Each square is an old hanky, and lace has been sewn around the edges, tiny satin ribbons sewn on for embellishment. A beautiful item to have and pass on to family. Who else is a quilt lover here? I gave a friend an old pattern of Overall Sam and she did his overalls in old jeans, then took a toothpick and drew a tiny snuff box on the back pocket with Clorox to outline the snuff box. Too Cute !

Hi GrannyG..... I have a quilt or two from my Dad's mom, and then I have an 8 pointed Texas Star type piecing on a large sheet to be used as a bedspread from my MOm's mom.
I remember my Bubba (Dad's mom) being incredible with fabric. She could take 1/2 yard of fabric and make a 3 piece suit for herself with multiple piecings to get the facings, etc. (maybe a slight exageration there, but she could stretch the fabrics).
Then my Mamaw (Mom's mom) spent several years doing alterations for an upscale wedding shop. I started sewing making Barbie clothes with the fancy scraps she had.
Right now, I'm more the participate in quilt block swaps and collect the blocks. I have a project or two that is not getting done fast and it should.
I did a bargello type square for a one block swap recently and really liked it, but it takes a good bit of time and looks fantastic when done.
And next I want to try to make a stained glass effect block. I may give that a try today.
And in the old quilts, I like the bow tie, and the ones I have have fabrics from dresses either I or Mom recognized.

I love looking at the old quilts. Especially the ones that appear to have been made from a families clothing.
I didn't get any of the family quilts when my parents died but I still remember the log cabin patterned one that my grandmother had made as a young woman for her hope chest.

I've always wished I had an old quilt that a granny or aunt had made. Instead, I guess I will have to make my own. That is on my "do before I die" list.

I've got a HUGE stack of projects. I'll have to live to be 100 to get it all done.
