I shut mine down when I am not on it but now I am on it quite a bit.
So I am wondering if it would be best to leave it on all the time instead of wear and tear of turning it off and on.
What do you think?

Somebody told me years ago (when I got my first computer and Win95 and a 28K modem was "advanced") that it's better to leave it on all the time. A few computers and years later, I still leave it on all day, but shut it down for the night about 4 nights a week (for no particular reason). It's set to have the screensaver come on within 3 minutes of non-use, and the monitor and whatever go into sleep mode (or whatever) within 10 minutes. That works for how I use my computer... this timing wouldn't necessarily work for someone else.
I have no idea if this is necessary or good or bad, it's just how I do it... considering that my olde Toshiba (above-mentioned first computer) still runs just fine, it doesn't seem to be doing any damage to the machine.

I shut it down for the night these days. I used to run it all the time, and that was fine in the city but out here you never know when the electricity is going to go off for a minute or two - or an hour or two. You know that little message that comes up telling you that scan disc is being run because you didn't shut the computer down properly (like it is your fault!) and that one or more discs may have errors/damage - well we now use an APC PowerChute to prevent damage to the computer, loss of any files, etc.
It's really neat. I can be typing an article, the electric goes off, it beeps and tells me that it is shutting down. It saves whatever I'm working in and shuts down. So even if I have run outside for a minute when it happens, I don't go back to find I've lost my work.

I leave mine on all the time. Like Vera; the screensaver is set to come on after 5 mins and it goes into that sleep mode after something like 10 min of inactivity.. This is a new computer-a Dell and the salesman said that it doesn't hurt them to stay on 24 hrs a day. I would turn it off and unplug it from the outlet if I was going to go on a trip, just to be safe. I love not having to power it up everytime I want to check my e-mail. Fast access DSL is so much nicer than my old, very slow 19kb dial up!

Starfire, I just went and looked and the screensaver timer option is located on the control panel and on my computer is in the Display area.

Auntie, where did you purchase the APC power chute? We don't lose power often but occasionally it will go out for just a few seconds but it's enough to shut down the computer. I have lost info when those minor power outages happened ;so I'd like to buy one of those APC outlets.

DH bought it but I don't know where - either Office Max or some other office supply store in Jackson. Call around a few places, you are in Memphis, shouldn't be too difficult to find one.

You can find the APC's at alot of places. Best Buy, Circuit city, etc. Wal Mart has even started carring some. They are a great thing to have as they will help protect against brownouts. As for the screen saver there is a timer setting on the display in the control pannel. Now for the tech side of the powering down and screen savers. It used to be that if you was gonna power down you wouldnt want to power back up for a while. Things have changed some. if you are going to have your computer off for more than 1 hour its still cool to power it down but if you are going to be back on it in less than an hour its still better to leave it up and running. For the screen saver you used to use them to protect against screen burn in. The newer monotiors(less than 3 years old) you dont have to worry about that. so if your monitor is more than 3 years old keep using them for protection. if it is less than 3 years old you dont need it for protection anymore(you can still use them cause they look cool but they do take some system resources to have them active)
