I found what I thought was a good deal on network storage - My Book World Edition 1TB for $269 at Sam's. Now that I'm reading up on it, most of the reviews are really bad. They mention overheating, slow file transfer times, routine crashes, cannot be configured for RAID, etc.
I haven't opened it yet...should I return it? If so, what can I get for around $300 that'll work for backups and file sharing on my home network?
Any recommendations? Due to physical space limitations, I'd rather not use an old PC but I also don't want to spend an arm and a leg.

Via, I wish I could help you but I don't have any form of file storage system other than burning everything off onto DVD's. I suppose I should move into the new century huh?

Hey! That Western Digital is the one I was worried about returning, just that the one I got was 1TB. Have you noticed extra slow file transfers?
Did you have to load software on each of the computers on the network or did they see it automatically?
I'm relieved to hear that you're happy with yours.

Mine came setup ready. meaning all I had to do was hook it up and and make sure that my router wasnt on lockdown for that and it all worked fine. I have been happy with mine. Not noticed any slow transfers(except when I was moving a 6.2 gig file over to it. that took a bit but it would for anything as the file was HUGE) I like it. If it was being used for some kinda of speed of service buisness with multiple people accessing it at the same time the IRQ's might run a little slow but as a personal use 1 or 2 puters accessing it at the same time it is fine.
