As a child I watched my father build many different stone fireplaces & chimneys. However I have no idea how and he doesn't live close enough to help.
I have one of those wimpy sorta unusable in a limited way fireplaces. Would like to build a Real Fireplace that I can put a large log in.
Does anyone know where I can get plans or ideas?

Bergere, I don't know how to do it either, but remember the homes of years gone by and how great those types of fireplaces were. I found this site & book list on building a stone fireplace & chimney. There's some good Q & A to get you started. Hope it's what you're looking for. www.hollowtop.com/cls_html/questions/fireplace_chimney.htm

Oh AS, thanks for the site to the rumford company! Not only do they have plans/kits for fireplaces but I just saw a clay oven link!! That site has a lot of great info!

You're welcome! I've had that link saved for a long time: it's something I'd like to build myself someday: I've seen these fireplaces before and they're really quite good. Better than regular fireplaces.
