It's official, after debating for a couple months dh and I have decided that after the holidays we are going to put cedar shakes on the walls of our kitchen, dining room, living room and hallway.
I'm pretty excited, I think it will look neat and have that outdoor look that we crave. If I could wiggle my nose and turn this place into a log house I would, but since I can't......well, I'm excited, lol.

That sounds like a great compromise barring getting some great nose twitching abilities before Jan. When I build my cabin, it will be made of untreated landscape timbers so I'm trying to figure out if I want to leave them 'raw' on the inside or put up a layer of foam insulation panels and some sort of interior. When you get your rooms started, could you post some pics. I might want to give that a go-all I know is I want it to be very simple living and rustic looking. Cedar smells so good too-ummm it would be like living in a forest!

Yep, I'll take pictures. I've never seen the look we are going for inside but dh has so I am taking his word that it will look neat, lol.
Hey, have you seen the pictures of the landscape timber cabin that someone on HT posted awhile back. I believe it was his hunting cabin. It was one of the nicest cabins I have ever seen. I had no idea that those landscape timbers could be used that way. I have no idea where to buy untreated timbers, but I would love to build a place like that. Very money wise too! If you didn't see them, let me know and I'll go over there and search for them, they are a must see!

That's where I got the idea! ;D The 15 acres of land I have has an 800 sq ft minimum on the main house; so I will have to make my cabin a bit bigger than the fellow on HT. I found a place in the middle of the state that's a mill and they will even make me cedar landscape timbers if that's what I want. Of course; I need a minimum of 948 of those baby's so they're quite willing to work with me. We haven't discussed final cost yet but they did say they'd make me a great deal plus deliver them! The lumber place next door just happens to do trusses, so I'm goign to see if everything can just be delived at one time. ;D I've been picking up light fixtures & fixture parts, close out hardware(gate hinges for 75 cents each & self closing door aparatus $2.), tools, and even spikes to hold the timbers together.

I'm so excited for you! I think it's a wonderful idea. You'll have to take lots and lots of pictures. Sounds like you are getting things stocked up, that is smart. Remember too, if you like rock and if it's easy to get where you will be, it's a great way to add walls using rock. I love that look too. I wish rock was easy to get here, but you have to pay so much for them it's not even funny.
One of the things I liked about the landscape timbers is that I could build because they are not heavy. There is so much that just dh has to do or I help with but can not do myself because it's too hard, but with the timbers I imagine it would be easy to work on walls and such. Putting trusses up is hard work though, lol.
You'll have to keep us up to date on your progress, how exciting!
