I was not sure where to put this, it is not a cooking question - and gardening didn't seem exactly right either.
How do you store your potatoes that you have grown? If you have produced a couple or three or more bushels, how do you store them, what do you do to keep them from sprouting?
I was reading this article about storing them in an air tight container with an apple and I know my grandfather used to store potatoes and apples by the bushel next to each other in the root cellar, but I don't have a root cellar.
I was thinking I might try using the plastic cat liter buckets with the reclosable lids?

My dad used to put his in a mound cover them with dirt and then cover them with hay. They kept pretty well that way. I don't remember if any sprouted or not but as long as they don't rot I think you can just cut the sprouts off. I would think the buckets would work if you could put them somewhere that doesn't get too hot.

I have put my potatoes in a large bucket with paper separating my layers. I put them in my closet and make sure the place is cool not humid. Mine didn't sprout and I ate out of them as I wanted. tnborn
