I was talking to my mom last week on the phone, asking her again for her donut recipe. I have been bugging her for months but she always says she doesn't know where it is and can't remember exactly what was in it. Well, turns out that my Mom is a conniving, secretive, manipulative....brilliant woman!
You see, when I was a kid she was famous for making these huge amounts of donuts. I remember her saying I had to stay out of the kitchen while she makes the donuts but if I was a good girl she would call me in later to make the holes in the donut. I was always a good girl because that was one of my favorite things to do with her when I was a little girl. Of course I didn't realize it takes more then 5 minutes to make the dough, so I was tricked, she said my Dad never knew how she made the donuts either.
Here is what she did....
You know those refridgerated bisquits that come in the can. You peel the paper away from the can and then whack it on the counter and it pops open? (Sorry I can't think of the brand name of them)
She would use the donut holer, to cut out the donut hole and throw the donuts in the deep fryer until brown. Roll it in sugar/cinnamon, powdered sugar, or put jelly on top.
I finally got to the store to buy some of those bisquits and yesterday I set about making donuts. They are so good, and dh and the kids raved over them. I know it sounds weird, but they look, taste, feel like regular donuts. Nobody would know they were not homemade donuts or heck...boughten donuts.
At the store they had a "generic" brand can of bisquits on sale. Buy four cans for $1.50. That's $1.50 for 32 donuts plus all the holes!
