My dad taught me how to sharpen knives using a stone and oil. I passed that knowledge onto our son. Here's a basic set of instructions in knife sharpening. If anyone has other sites or is willing to explain the process, please share your knowledge. www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/sharpen/instruct.html

My mother was one who could and would use a steel. Man she was good at it too. Rather scary if you ask me. But I do wish I had learned the art. Maybe I should go ffor a visit and get her to teach me.

Marchwind, My dad could use a steel too and you're right; the sight of that knife flying across the steel did leave an impression on a kid! ;D Since my folks have been gone for many years; I'm trying to pull so much from my memory to teach to Cody. That works for most things but there's some forgotten arts that I only watched and now I don't have anyone to ask or a way to find out about ingredients, amounts, timing, etc. So if you still have that chance to learn from your mom; I'd say take full advantage of it.

Yea I know Kathy! She lives in another state though. Maybe I'll invite her here and tell her to bring her steel. Then I can put her to work teaching me and my kids how to use it.
Both of my kids know how to sharped knives on a stone, their dad taught them that.

Don't you wish you could go back to being a child and REALLY pay attention to what your parents know? There is so much lost knowledge there.....
Knife sharpening is a great skill....one that I am not too good at.
