Hubby is normally pretty good with tractors. However our 78 allis chalmer 5020, steering is not working well. Front end was re-built when his Dad was still alive back in 1998.So it is not a problem with that. The manuals do not have anything in them about the steering and neither can I find a manual that does.
So any tractor folks out there can tell us in detail what it might be?
Tractor stores, local, are useless. Stupid places will only help with their brands. Never seen the like until we came here.

I don't know much about power steering, since my tractor is 1949 vintage. Is the steering effort too high across the whole range of 'back and forth ' motion? 'Tight' spots as the wheel is turned? I assume fluid level has been checked? There could possibly be a pump issue that the front-end rebuild wouldn't have covered. I believe that would be best diagnosed by having a shop check and verify the pump's output pressure, but you've already said the local folks will only work on their stuff so that's a problem. One of these forums might be able to offer some help/advice: This one is the AC discussion forum on Yesterday's Tractors www.ytmag.com/ac/wwwboard1.htmlThis one is 'Today's Tractors' forum from the same site. It's supposed to be for tractors from 1980 on up, but '78 is close to '80 so maybe they could help: www.todaystractors.com/ttforum/wwwboard1.htmlGood luck with fixing your problem. Tractors come in handy this time of year. I have to get mine up the road a few miles and brush-hog some ground we have.

Thanks...but Hubby has already posted on those forums. No help yet. No shops local that are willing to take a look at it. No one in this part of the state works on this brand. Most close place I have found to get parts is all the way in Kalamith Falls, thats 8 hours away from here and no way to transport it. Ours does not have power steering. One reason I can't use it. Is the most simple tractor out there..rather the poor mans tractor. Yes,, he makes sure everything is kept oiled and lubed. Thanks for the ideas kyosa, really appricate it.
Will be really tough if we can't get it fixed. If it doesn't rain too much this weekend..figure he will be spending a lot of time taking what there is of it apart.
