It's happened twice now, 2 boards that I go to have been hacked. I've only been in cyberspace for a few months so I don't really understand why someone would do such a thing to a forum. Do they hack into a forum to retreive personal info or is it done purely out of spite to screw up things for other people? I guess one would have to be pretty handy with the 'puter to accomplish such a task, so why? Why do they bother? Please help me understand.

Most of the time it is mainly because they can. They get personal thrills from it. Some do it for their "portfolio" and others do it just for the practice for more sinister plans

On one forum I went to they hacked the site, because the owner would never update the software to the forum. They were proving a point. You need to update the forum software for safety measures & to get the new add on's for the forum.... But most of the time, it's for the reasons Computer Wiz stated.

I belonged to one I really liked but trolls started taking over. They would start things with people and say they were someone else on the board. It got to where you didn't know who you were talking to anymore so I just left.
Luckily I found this one as I was about to leave that other one.

Starfire, in cases like that, most forums have a IP address that you can look at for each member, be sure to jot that down when someone first signs up. That way if they go to play games, they really can't, cause normally IP addy's don't lie. Also the owners of the forum, should have nipped that in the bud from the get go. Some forum owners like games like that to be played. Brings drama to the board and people spread the word, and you do have people showing up that normally don't, and that brings people to post. All very sad, but true.

I agree, we're all here to make friends and have fun ~ not to get mentally messed around. Regular "life" does that by itself.....

That is not always a good way to tell cause dial up users IP address changes each time they connect to the internet and with todays technology it is real easy to change a reported IP address. I live in TX but I could easily make my IP address report that I live in say Ney York or even out of country. Mark

That's true. But at the same time, it's still good to watch the IP address's. I've known of a few spamers ( not crackers ) to be caught this way.
