This may not be the right spot to ask, but here goes. I have a few photos I would like to send to forum once in a while, but can't make sense of photobucket and similar services. And frankly, I am not too keen on storing my photos "out there"-not that they are weird, it is just the idea that I find bothersome. Is there some way to do this without resorting to external services or spending boatloads of money? I have seen reference to 'GIMP', but it looks like a mine field to figure out. Thanks...

I use Photobucket but have all of my albums set to private. I do have photos stored on shutterfly which is a lot like using a Kodak site but you can post a link to the album of your choice. I don't know of anyway to do a direct link from your files to posts, maybe Mark/puter wiz will know of someway to do it. I don't know if GIMP is the photo-editing program like Photoshop or not, that's the only GIMP program I've ever heard about. If you have some pics that you want hosted but you don't want a direct link back to All of your pictures, you could always open a second Photobucket account and only put pictures on there that you don't mind sharing. It would keep the rest of your pictures as well as your idenity more private. I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.

Thanks Kathy, Information is appreciated. Maybe I am just a square peg in a land of round holes! Yes, same GIMP, I am sure. I looked at it, but it teeters on the verge of Linux Land, an area that is confusing in terminology at best. At least to me.

I use photobucket too, but since I am on a slow dial up I can only get one picture to upload at a time without it freezing up on me.
I've been on forums where people don't like to have their photo's out there for the public and they say they will post a picture and then delete it in a week. That way everyone gets to see it but you feel more secure that its not still there for months/years to come. All you have to do is delete the photobucket picture and it takes the picture down on the forums you posted it at.
I like how Via blurs out her face when she shares pictures. I'm very shy about using my face or my families faces in pictures, so that is another way around being a little more anonymous. I never use an open picture hosting site, only ones that let me have my pictures private and under a password.

Photobucket and other such services are actually rather secure. It is also set up for those with not much knowledge on setting up servers and the such. If you want you can set up server to "serve" your pictures from you home computer but that requires a constant connection to the internet(i.e.: DSL, Cable, T Line etc). If you are not connected then the picture wont be viewable. the drawback to that is if you are connected others can tell if your connected by the fact that the picture is viewable. Even thought it is down right now due to somehardware issues I actually use my puter that I host my website off of to also "serve" my pictures when I post a pic. Since serving the pics is very close to hosting a website.

Skookum, if you have pictures you want on the forum but you don't want them connected to your name or photo album; I host and post a lot of members pics. I have a private album on Photobucket that I use for member pics. That way if anyone went looking, they wouldn't find your name associated with any pics posted here. I can also put privacy blocks on faces to hide identities. I've done many pictures for Nan so she can give you a reference about my integrity. Just e-mail any pics you want hosted to my e-mail: kathy.inmemphis@gmail.com

If you're comfortable with computers, set yourself up a Linux computer (a Pentium 3 will do but if you plan to use your computer while you are hosting it, get a Pentium 4 or better). Load Linux on it - I'm using this Ubuntu Linux, it's free - and you can set your home computer up as a web server even while you use it. That way you just use your current internet connection and you can keep control over it. Here's mine (as long as I keep my domain name registered with the Internet Mafia -www.dyndns.org - for free): georutkay.homelinux.org/It's hosted over my home connection on my home computer even as I type this. And I have photos on it too.
